One of the things which appeals about the X-Trail is that it feels solid, not just in its overall build quality, but also in the operation of the steering, gear change, minor controls and so forth. That's solid as in sturdy, not as in stolid or ponderous. Out on the road, the last two adjectives definitely don't apply. The T-Spec is loaded for bear, with the X-Trail's most generous specification including traction control, ESP, satellite navigation using the familiar Nissan Birdview system, and neatly styled roof rails with built-in forward-facing "Safari" lights which are far less aerodynamically obstructive than these things are when mounted out in the open. In this case they're certainly bright enough, working only in conjunction with the headlamps on full beam, and Nissan is right to say you should be pretty careful about where you use them. This is one of the Nissans for which the Renault connection does no harm, because that's the source of the 2.2-litre dCi engine with its 134bhp and 231lb/ft of torque at 2000rm. It doesn't make the X-Trail an absolute flier, but it does produce lively enough performance for a 4x4 of this overall size, with good mid-range pull and, thanks to the six-speed manual transmission, an easy motorway cruising gait. The seats are all-leather in the T-Spec, those in front being heated, quite supportive and electrically adjustable. There's a chunky-to-hold leather steering wheel rim too. Features familiar from lower-priced cars in the X-Trail catalogue include a slide/tilt sunroof, fold-in door mirrors and a slide-forward centre armrest between the front seats. Rotary is the design theme for the air conditioning controls, and also for the one, down by the driver's left, which offers an easy switch from two-wheel to four-wheel drive. Like so many vehicles in its class, the X-Trail can give a good enough account of itself in quite rough going, although it's set up to be more of a comfortable road car with a better ride quality than many of its rivals, not an all-terrain bruiser. Nissan builds Primeras at Sunderland, and the technical centre at Cranfield makes sure that the UK and European versions are quite different in many ways from the Japanese-market cars. The company likes to say that the two different model streams have fewer than 20% of parts in common. There used to be a four-door saloon as well as the five-door hatchback tested here, but that was always a minority seller and has disappeared from the current range. Around 85% of UK buyers go for the hatchback, 15% for the estate. The T-Spec has ESP, a tyre pressure monitor and cruise control added to the already generous one-level-down SXE specification, although in the turbo diesel it's basic cruise control. Only the two-litre petrol variant gets the "intelligent" system which keeps a beady eye on the traffic in front. And it's only the petrol model which is available with Nissan's own CVT transmission. The 2.2-litre dCi (Nissan has started to use Renault designations for its diesel engines) comes with a six-speed manual box. Metallic paint is standard on the T-Spec, which also has 17" ten-spoke alloys, self-levelling xenon headlamps, rain sensor wipers and a colour-screen rear parking camera. The satellite navigation system, with its seen-from-above Birdview setting, now has a traffic avoidance channel added, and altogether the T-Spec is pretty well kitted out for that £20,000-plus price tag, which some people, let's face it, will regard as being on the sweaty-palms side for a Primera. Reversing camera (GPS screen automatically switches to camera view when you put the car into reverse). Excellent heated leather seats with electric ajustment. Inteligent laser guided cruise control that actually senses when the car in front has slowed down and slows you down, then accelerates when they do! Bad Points : Quite a few niggly problems. Cruise control went wrong and took four visits to the dealer to sort. Drivers wing mirror glass kept falling out and is now superglued in awaiting a replacement (five weeks so far). General comments : This Nissan Primera 2.0 T-Spec is my first truly decent car. I had an old Primera from 13000 miles and traded it in at 113000, in which time it only broke down once! I decided to go Japanese again and bought a Mazda626 which was the worst and most unreliable car I've ever had. So, I traded that in after a year and decided to go for another Primera. I had a budget of about 7k. However, the Nissan garage had a Primera T-Spec (2004) demonstrator on the forecourt with 15000 miles on it, with an asking price of 13k (£21k new!). I drove it, I used the GPS and they sold it to me. I have never regreted it despite one or two problems. The main reason to buy this car is is because of the fantastic GPS. It is DVD based and knows all of Europe down to street number level. I can type in an address and after a few second I will be prompted by a very nice woman (with a lovely clear English accent)on where to go. The woman warns well in advance of a turn and just before it. She is almost faultless. I was surprised that at awkward junctions she will say something like 'at the end of the road turn left and then take the second turning on the right'. Or, at the roundabout take the third exit. If it's a big roundabout she will then tell me to take the next exit as I pass the second. Brilliant. The road ahead is shown clearly on a 7" screen that is built into the dashboard (so it can't get stolen) You can zoom in and out to see just ahead or your entire route or anywhere in between. There are some very useful 'quick stop' functions. Want to find a petrol station, hospital restaurant, hotel, etc, etc? Just press a button, select what you want and it finds you the nearest five. You can then select one by pressing a button and it calculates your route and off you go. I had been looking for an obscure restaurant in Derby for ages. All I knew was that it was 'by a river'. I was passing near to where I thought it was so did a 'quick stop' and there it was. I selected it and it guided me (and I mean this litteraly) to the door! Unbelievable. Cruise control (which turned out to be broken when I bought it but is mended now.... eventually) is also outstanding. The difference between this and a normal cruise control is that there is a laser mounted under one of the headlights. It detects cars in front and actually applies the brake to slow you down if you get too close or if the car in front brakes. This sounds weird but it's really useful in motorway traffic because when the car in front accelerates it will take you with it. So, a usable cruise control even in traffic. Reversing camera is a pinhole thing that you can't see unless it's pointed out to you. When you put the car in reverse the GPS screen becomes a monitor and you can actually see behind you to the back bumper of your car. I can park it with a half inch gap at the back. Leather heated seats are comfortable and a switch on the side moves them up and down, backwards and forwards and reclines them. Oh, and it is an excellent drive and it looks great too. 33 miles to the gallon (says the onboard computer) Read tcsr205's full review and ratings (690 words) Share this page: Del.icio.us Furl My Yahoo Digg Google StumbleUpon Facebook Share this 10 Best Family Car Auto Trader Best Family Cars Nissan Primera GT Nissan Primera GT Specification Best Family Car UK Nissan Primera Performance Parts Owners Pages of the Nissan Primera GT Nissan Primera Troubleshooting Family Cars Rated More from Review Centre Review Centre Deals "Save up to 20% on your day to day shopping with ReviewCentre Deals. Despite its size this is a vehicle to appeal to both sexes.Although it is big and commanding it really does drive like a car. The V6 engine has plenty of muscle and the ride is extremely composed for such a tall vehicle with good grip giving comfortable cornering and direct and responsive steering. It is even fairly easy to get in and out of - even for the vertically challenged. A running board and handle allows shorter people like the other half to haul themselves into the seats with ease. The second row of seating provides plenty of space for three adults and the rear two seats also accommodate adults comfortably. With all seven seats occupied, there is little room for luggage and the standard roofbars can then come in to play. But all five rear seats fold flat individually, allowing for a class-leading cavernous boot area or a multitiude of other combinations.Other nice touches include an impressive voice activated satellite navigation system with telephone and Bluetooth technology and an ear splitting sound system. There are also rain sensing wipers and an auto dimming mirror as standard. The interior is impressively kitted out in leather and dark soft trim. The front seats are electrically adjustable and heated and all the usual electrics are availble. Zoned air conditioning with controls for the rear passengers are also standard. It's been a good year for Nissan - the X-Trail has topped a recent What Car? poll as the best off-roader. The Pathfinder shares all the good bits, including the four-litre V6 turbo-charged engine. This is a very refined engine that deliver 265bhp, has masses of power and accelerates more quickly than many hot hatches. It completes the 0-62mph sprint in 8.9 seconds leaving many boy racers scratching their heads as they disappear in the rear view mirror. On the down side it is a bit of a binge drinker and only just manages 20mpg.The five-speed auto box is also a slick changer, but care needs to be taken not to accidentally push it into the semi-automatic mode.I had little chance to go off road, but the Nissan's pedigree has already been proven with the X-Trail.Standard two wheel drive is what most people will use but as conditions deteriorate, you can switch to auto which will engage four wheel drive when adverse conditions are detected, high-gear four wheel drive for even worse conditions and low-ratio four wheel drive for travelling through the Amazon rain forests.A 2.5 litre common rail diesel version is also available for those looking for better economy.A worth challenger to the market leaders, the only thing lacking is the name. Nissan is not yet automatically associated with off-road excellence in the way some of its competitors are. That is rapidly changing.FAST FACTSNissan Pathfinder 4.0 V6 T-SpecPrice: £33,960Mechanical: 265bhp, 3,954cc, 6cyl petrol engine driving all four wheels via 5spd manual gearboxMax speed: 118mph0-62mph: 8.9 secsCombined mpg: 20.9Insurance group: 16CO2 emissions: 327g/kmBiK rating: 35%Warranty: 3yrs/ 60,000 miles; 3yrs paint; 6yrs anti-rust Words: Bill McCarthy Keywords: nissan , pathfinder Rate this article: Login to rate this article...
