Additional transmission controls include Power and Snow settings, as well as 4x4 power options. It employs a multilink rear suspension with ventilated disc brakes all around. [edit] E51 design and features The Elgrand exterior is quite different from that of its predecessor, now equipped with electronically remote-controlled doors, side mirrors with signal lights, a rear roof spoiler, and 16- (XL) or 17-inch (HWS) aluminum alloy wheels. The new front styling, including a chromed grille, gives the Elgrand a sportier look. Interior features include captain-style seats, an eight-speaker sound system with an optional nine-speaker system by Bose Corp., and a TV/DVD player with a nine-inch (229mm) screen. The Elgrand is also equipped with an eight-inch (203mm) LCD monitor in the dashboard for the Carwings Vehicle Information System (also known as VIS). Optional extras include heated front seats, electronic curtains and finer levels of interior trim, such as woodgrain effects on fascia panels and the steering wheel. Like most newer models produced by Nissan, the Elgrand comes with the "Keyless-go" feature for enhanced user convenience. Higher spec Elgrands like the Highway Star, Rider, X and XL versions come with an internal GPS system dedicated for use in Japan. An optional GPS system for Hong Kong and Guangdong Province in China is available. Growth in these markets is mainly driven by car enthusiasts or an unfilled need for an eight-seat vehicle or MPV in that market. In Hong Kong presently (2007), two models are on offer, the Elgrand XL and Elgrand Highway Star, an eight-passenger variant. The Elgrand is packed with options including the AFS (Active Front Lighting System), also available in the third-generation Toyota Previa/Estima. The Elgrand comes in six colors and is equipped with twin sunroofs and Xenon headlamps with an automatic on-off system. The base price for either the Elgrand XL or Highway Star is $486,800 Hong Kong Dollars. In the United Kingdom most Elgrands are imported for resale through specialist Japanese car import agents or dealerships. There is also a growing market in self-importing Elgrands by either purchasing directly through Japanese car auctions or online dealers. Currently in the UK it is estimated that 600-700 Elgrands have been imported, most being the earlier E50 (1997-2001), and possibly only about 50 the later E51 (2002-2009) versions. The car feels secure on the road, with massive levels of grip – even in the wet. Tweet Few cars have been as hyped as Nissan’s much-vaunted GT-R, which was first unveiled in concept form at the Tokyo Motor Show as long ago as 2001 writes Peter Carroll. Widely considered an update to the legendary all-wheel drive Skyline (though it does not bear the same name) the GT-R made another show appearance in 2005 before being launched in Japan towards the end of 2007. But the first UK cars did not arrive until mid-2009, which served only to fan the flames of the automotive media’s obsession with the model. Click on the gallery to your right for more pictures So now that the initial launch frenzy has subsided, was it worth all the fuss – and is the GT-R really as good as a supercar for half the money? The car is longer and wider than I expected and more lowslung too, with Aston Martin-style door handles. It’s much better-looking in the metal than it is in pictures. Nissan’s designers took their inspiration from robots and jet fighters and it shows in the car’s edgy, angular styling. The leather-trimmed cabin is understated and purposeful, with the driver cocooned in a ‘cockpit’. The driving position is relatively high compared with some other sports cars and access in and out is surprisingly easy. The Nissan is configured as a 2+2 but space in the back is compromised to say the least. Even small children will not be able to squeeze in if a tall driver has the seat all the way back. Not so the boot, however, which is surprisingly big. There’s a lot of technology on board with switches to alter the gearshift speeds (the Sport setting takes 0.5 of a second, while Race is 0.2 of a second); shock absorber settings (Race, Normal and Comfort); and stability control system (Race, Normal and Off). The sat nav is straight forward to use and has a useful facility for navigating round traffic jams. It’s backed up a thumping Bose sound system. Gadget freaks will be delighted that there’s even an on-board driving recorder which is great for analysing laps round your nearest circuit but probably overkill for the daily commute. Power comes from a handbuilt 3.8 litre turbo developing 485PS from as low as 3,000rpm. The car scorches to 62mph in 3.5 seconds and the top speed is in excess of 190mph. Most of the torque is fed to the rear wheels but up to 50 per cent can be directed to the front thanks to the car’s all-wheel drive system. The car feels secure on the road, with massive levels of grip – even in the wet. The only dark cloud on the handling front is a notable tendency for the 20-inch wheels to tramline. There’s a six-speed dual clutch transmission with paddle shifters and downshift rev matching – but you won’t need to use them for regular driving. Braking can be left late thanks to powerful Brembos which make short work of stopping the GT-R – and at 1,740kg, it’s not exactly a light car. Nissan hasn’t gone overboard on engineering an overly dramatic exhaust sound – it probably figured the car didn’t need one. Refinement is pretty good but the ride can be firm and bobbly over poor surfaces. Road humps are best avoided but it’s generally a car that’s easy to live with in daily use. Running costs will be far from cheap, however. Expect around 20mpg, less if you do a lot of town driving, and a lot less if you regularly visit the track. Insurance is unsurprisingly in the top 50 bracket (or group 20 in old money). A further potential issue is servicing. The GT-R needs to be fettled every 6,000 miles, compared with 20,000 for a Porche 911 Turbo. And while Nissan has ten high performance centres dotted around the country, the nearest to the West Midlands are at Oxford or on Merseyside. Still, you don’t buy a car like this for its miserly fuel economy… Those in search of more dramatic looks or a more prestigious badge could consider the Audi R8 or Porsche 911 Turbo – but these will cost anything up to £50,000 more than the Nissan, without necessarily being able to best it round a circuit. At just over £60,000 on the road there is little to touch the GT-R for serious performance motoring – though to get the best from it you’re going to need to head for your nearest track. Some may prefer to wait for the facelifted model which is due to arrive in the UK shortly – but be warned that it will be £10,000 more expensive. View more: Peter Carroll news. I make that disclaimer before I write this review, for I am not a driver and I know nothing about the technicalities of cars! Nevertheless, I think a review by a passenger just adds another dimension! For many years, as a family, we've had string of Peugeot cars, except for one unfortunate episode with a Ford Focus. When the opportunity arose to trade in an old car under the Government's scrappage scheme, we decided that we would also trade in our three year old Peugeot for a new car. The obvious choice was another Peugeot, but we tried them and they seemed terribly basic. We also tried a Honda Jazz, but it turned out to be too expensive; and also a Citreon which apparently felt very heavy to drive. Never before had we considered a Nissan, but we thought we'd give it ago on the basis that you don't know unless you try! Both the Nissan Note, and the Nissan Micra were within our price range, though eventually the boot of the Micra was found to be a little on the small side. So, what about the Note? Well, we went for the five-door n-tec model as it offered interest-free finance over three years (an excellent deal alongside the scrappage money). For me, the Note is an extremely comfortably car to sit in as a passenger both in the front and back seats. You have the option to increase boot space by moving the whole of the back seat forward. Even with this placed as far forward as possible, there was still plenty of leg-room in the back without any need to adjust the fronts seats. Of course, you can also fold down the back seats to give a greatly enlarged boot. If I had one criticism, neither the headrests in the back or front are particularly comfortably, but I guess it's a personal thing - I prefer something a little less hard! There is plenty of leg-room in the front passenger seat, and at just under six foot, I can stretch both legs out straight with the seat in a position as to still allow room for another adult in the back with plenty of leg-room. Certainly, the general space is impressive both in the back and front. A feature which was new to me was to have the back windows slightly tinted. This isn't something generally noticed from the outside, though in a funny sort of way, it does make the back feel much more cosy than it would with large expansive clear windows...but maybe it's an illusion! The n-tec offers a built in SatNav which is very effective. For several years, we'd had a TomTom which plugged into the cigarette lighter, but the Nissan version is much better, and easier to use. One feature which it lacks is the option to put in a whole series of destinations (useful when house-hunting!), but again, that's really a 'nice extra' rather than a necessity. You can use the radio when the SatNav is running, and it very cleverly reduces the radio volume when the SatNav wishes to speak. It also has an auxiliary socket to attach an iPod or MP3 player. On first inspection, the boot doesn't seem very big, but this is an illusion. Firstly, as mentioned above, the seats move forward adding another six inches or so. Secondly, the base of the boot lifts out creating a deeper boot, again adding another six inches. The panels which you remove can cleverly be inserted again in a vertical position as to ensure you shopping bags do not fall over! The engine is very quiet. We have a diesel, and thank goodness, these days we seem to have been saved from (a) the need to wait several seconds before you can switch on the engine; and (b) that 'heavy' diesel sound! In fact it's much quieter than the petrol Peugeot we'd had previously. I would like to have had a pocket in the rear doors, but there are pockets in the back of the seats, so again, plenty of storage. In the back, the centre panel folds down to give a double-width arm rest for both passengers (or a picnic table, depending which way you look at it!). Of course, there is room for three in the back, all with proper seatbelts. I hope this has given you just a snapshot of what the Nissan Note offers from a passenger's point of view. In that capacity, I am entirely satisfied. It is such an improvement, both in terms of features and comfort, on the Peugeots we've had, all of which now seem terribly old-fashioned.
