It was originally conceived as a replacement for Nissan's first front-wheel drive platform, the Nissan Cherry family (models E10 and F10). Although Pulsar models were mainly in front-wheel drive configuration, Nissan did offer four-wheel drive models during the 1980s to early-1990s, ultimately ending with the four-wheel drive turbocharged Nissan Pulsar GTI-R. Some models were sold as Nissan Sunny and Nissan Almera. Contents 1 First generation (N10; 1978–1982)

This model was known as the "Datsun Cherry" or "Datsun 100A/120A/130A/140A/150A" in Europe and the Datsun 310 in the U.S.. In Canada, the Datsun 310 was available with "Pulsar" striping on the rear quarters. The Nissan Langley, from 1980, was a more upmarket Pulsar.
The Pulsar N10 was available in an abundance of bodystyles during its production run, however not all bodystyles appeared on all markets where it was sold.
A facelift was given to the N10 in 1980 featuring a horizontal grille and rectangular headlights, and the Nissan E-Series engines, intended for the N12, were introduced to the model in 1981.

5-door hatchback A more angular version was announced in mid-1982. This model was also built in Italy by Alfa Romeo as the Arna (named after the joint venture which created it, Alfa Romeo Nissan Autoveicoli), using Alfa Romeo engines. Confusingly, the Italian models were also sold with Nissan badges, in Japan as the Nissan Pulsar Milano and in Europe as the Nissan Cherry Europe. At Alfa Romeo, the Arna was meant to replace lesser versions of the popular Alfasud, but never had the Italian car's appeal. The Cherry Europe also failed in its home market—lacking the build quality and reliability of its Japanese built twin car, yet at the same time managing to inherit the typical 1980s Alfa vulnerability to body corrosion.[citation needed]
By this time, Nissan had more or less standardized its naming policy worldwide, so as a Nissan it tended, with few exceptions, to be known as a Pulsar.
Those exceptions included related models in the Japanese home market. The Nissan Langley was a Pulsar with more powerful engines and four headlights. The Nissan Liberta Villa was a four-door version. The Nissan Pulsar EXA was a two-door coupé version with pop-up headlights. European markets continued with the Cherry name (as opposed to "Cherry Europe" for Alfa-built models).
The Pulsar EXA was known in North America as the Pulsar NX and shared many of its parts with the Nissan Sentra. This version of the Pulsar NX was available from 1983 to 1986 and came with either the fuel injected turbocharged E15ET engine or the carbureted naturally-aspirated E16S engine. The Langley was built in Australia as the Nissan Pulsar, while the more standard Pulsar appeared there as the Holden Astra. The three-door and five-door hatchback versions of the Pulsar were also made available, replacing the old Datsun 310 hatchbacks, but they proved to be unpopular and they were withdrawn from Nissan's North American lineup after one year. The five-door hatchback remained in Australia until 1987, where it was known as the Pulsar ET Turbo and featured the E15ET engine.[citation needed]
[edit] Pulsar EXA Convertible
This was a limited edition model designed to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Nissan Cherry dealership chain in Japan. It was launched in May, 1985, and just 100 vehicles were made available for the whole of Japan.
The vehicle sports numerous special accessories, including a soft top made from a special insulating material to keep out the rain and heat, and a rear window made from organic glass to ensure high visibility. 1982–1985 Nissan Pulsar (N12) GL sedan 1985–1987 Nissan Pulsar (N12) GX sedan 1986 Nissan Pulsar (N12) GL 5-door hatchback 1986 Nissan Pulsar (N12) GL 5-door hatchback 1986 Nissan Pulsar NX (U.S.) [edit] Third generation (N13; 1986–1990) N13 Also called

A squarer Pulsar (N13 series) was released as a result; innovations included a four-wheel drive model. The Pulsar–Astra relationship continued in Australia, with the Langley sold as the Pulsar there and the four-door sedan version of the Nissan called the Pulsar Vector. The Langley also continued sales in Japan as a "Japanese-spec" Pulsar with a more powerful DOHC 1.8 L engine as opposed to its Holden sourced SOHC counterpart in Australia. The N13 Langley featured other options such as a limited-slip differential, luxurious interior and the much sought-after black headlights, center grille and round Skyline-style taillights. Driver side airbags were made a standard feature in the 1987 Nissan Pulsar NX, however passenger airbags were made an option in 1994. In countries such as New Zealand, the Sunny and Pulsar were combined into a single model, the Nissan Sentra — which differed (apart from the station wagon) from the models sold under the same name in the United States.

In Europe, it was sold as the Nissan Sunny, unrelated, however, to the Sunny sold in Asia. In Malaysia, it was sold as the Nissan Sentra, differ from the Nissan Sentra sold in the America and visually similar to the European Nissan Sunny. In South Africa it was sold as the Nissan Sabre. There were three and five-door hatchbacks and a four-door sedan.
The (Japanese: Nissan EXA) was spun off as its own model, with an innovative modular rear end: customers could opt for a coupé, hatchback or an open-top car. In Japan and the US, the EXA also had the Sportbak wagon option. This version was actually based on the North American B12 "Sentra" chassis, and was equipped with the CA16DE engine. This version of the EXA was available in North America under the name Pulsar NX.
The North American Pulsar NX was offered in two distinct trim levels: the economical XE (1.6 litre E16i in 1987–1988 and 1.6 litre GA16i in 1989–1990) and the twin-cam, performance-oriented SE (1.6 litre CA16DE in 1987 and 1.8 litre CA18DE in 1988–1989).
In Australia, the Series 1 EXA (1987) came with the CA16DE, vinyl rear seats, front vented disk with rear drum brakes, and power steering. The Series 2 EXA (1988–1989) featured the CA18DE and cloth rear seats. There were also two GP versions of the S2 EXA made. 45 white GP edition vehicles were specially made for the celebrity race at the Adelade Grand Prix in 1988. They had all the features of the Series 2, but also had SSS pulsar wheels, build numbers on a badge in the dash and a factory roll cage which was removed after the race. The 1989 GP featured all the same features of the Series 2 EXA. They also had the Pulsar SSS wheels, a more aggressive front bumper, and build numbers on a badge in the dash. All 200 89 GPs made were red. The Series 3 (1990–91) EXA added rear disc brakes, improved seats and optional power windows. The Nissan EXA Solair was a luxury version of the base model that featured power windows, 5 spoke alloy wheels, and a different front bumper. In 1991, Kodak had a competition for five fully optioned Series 3 Nissan EXAs. The Kodak EXAs featured an exclusive pearlescent yellow paint scheme.

Holden in Australia did not use a variant of this Pulsar, instead choosing to use a rebadged variant of the rival Toyota Corolla, which was sold as the Holden Nova until the late 1990s when they reintroduced the Astra name for their variant of the Opel Astra.
This version continued to be offered in New Zealand as the Sentra (unrelated to the version sold in North America and Mexico. In Europe, the Sunny name continued, applied to three-door hatchback, five-door hatchback and four-door sedan models, alongside the Sunny California station wagon from Japan (called either the Sunny Estate or Sunny Traveller).
The Langley and Liberta Villa model names were now discontinued.
There was no N14 Pulsar offered in the United States or Canada either; instead, the North American Pulsar evolved into what was known as the NX1600 with the GA16DE engine, the SR18DE or the NX2000 with the SR20DE engine and rear disc brakes. The NX cars are sport coupe shape of the same chassis, engines, body electronics and even dashboard as Pulsar and Sunny. 1994 was the last year for the N chassis in the US. This generation was badged as the Nissan Sabre (hatch back) and Sentra(4-door saloon) in South Africa, and the Nissan Sunny in Europe. The Pulsar was Wheels magazine's Car of the Year for 1991, which it shared with the Honda NSX — the only time the award was shared by two different cars.
Sabre models used the following engines: Petrol 1.6/90bhp 4-cylinder
1.6/102bhp 4-cylinder
2.0/143bhp 4-cylinder The Sabre in South Africa was sold only in the following versions: 160 GXi
2.0 GXi info here All Sabre models were built in South Africa by Nissan South Africa and exported to Namibia as well.
The N14 series also saw the introduction of the Nissan Pulsar GTI-R (chassis code E-RNN14 in Japan, and badged as Sunny GTI-R in Europe with chassis code EGNN14). This was a homologation variant produced to satisfy the necessary WRC rules at that time. It featured a turbocharged SR20DET engine producing 169 kW (230 bhp JIS) of power, as well as the ATTESA all-wheel drive system.
The Taiwanese Pulsar, was manufactured from Yulon under its AREX brand - where it got the same Engine from the Japanese Version. Pulsar GTI-R [edit] Fifth generation (N15; 1995–2000) N15 Also called

The New Zealand Nissan Sentra changed name to Pulsar after the Nissan assembly plant in Wiri, Auckland closed down in 1998, in favour of imports from Japan. Again, four and five-door models were offered, with three door models being available in Europe only, and not Australia and New Zealand.
The Australasian versions included the LX, SLX, Q and SSS variants. New Zealand specific versions included the S and SE variant. The SSS model (5-door hatch only) featured the SR20DE engine featuring 105 kW (141 hp)/179 Nm. The station wagon continued to be from the Sunny, later spun off in Japan into the Nissan Wingroad.
[edit] Japan
In Japan, the N15 was available under numerous nameplates. These included:
Pulsar Serie Rezzo 3-door hatch (GA15DE engine, base JDM Pulsar, indicative features include absent rear high stop lamp and front fascia black slatted spotlight covers until 1998 facelift).
Lucino BB 3-door hatch (GA15DE engine, exactly same as Pulsar Rezzo, except for rear indicator lens covers being clear coloured).
Pulsar Serie X1 3-door hatch and 4-door sedan (GA15DE engine, indicative features included high stop lamp incorporated into rear spoiler (hatch and sedan) or bootlid (sedan only) and option of driving lights. Front fascia differs to that of Pulsar Serie Rezzo).
Lucino JJ 3-door hatch(GA15DE engine, exactly same as Pulsar Serie X1, except for rear indicator lens covers being clear coloured).
Pulsar Serie X1R 3-door hatch and 4-door sedan (exactly same as Pulsar Serie X1 and Lucino JJ, except GA16DE engine featured instead of GA15DE).
Pulsar CJ-I and Pulsar CJ-II 4-door sedan (GA15DE engine, exactly same as Pulsar Serie Rezzo).
Pulsar SR-V 5-door hatch (GA15DE or SR18DE engine, indicative features include rear number plate surround fascia, front nudge bar and two-toned paint scheme).
Lucino SR-V 5-door hatch (exactly same as Pulsar SR-V, except rear indicator lens covers being clear coloured).
Pulsar GTI 3-door hatch and 4-door sedan (SR18DE engine, indicative features include 15" alloy wheels).
Pulsar 5-door hatch (GA15DE engine, exactly same as Pulsar and Lucino SR-V but without two-tone paint, nudge bar and rear number plate surround fascia).
Pulsar VZR 3-door hatch (SR16VE engine, available from 1998 onwards only, featured Nissan's NEO VVL technology and 15" alloys from Pulsar GTI, 175bhp).
Pulsar SR-V VZR 5-door hatch (SR16VE engine, exactly same as Pulsar VZR 3-door hatch).
Lucino SR-V VZR 5-door hatch (SR16VE engine)
A 4-wheel drive option was available in Pulsar SR-V, Lucino SR-V and Pulsar CJ-I, CJ-II and X1 (sedan only) models.
JDM N15 Pulsar and Lucino models had drivers airbag as standard. Passenger airbag was an option in 1995 and standard from 1996 onwards. Speedometer became digital from 1998. Tachometer was not present on Pulsar Serie Rezzo, Pulsar CJ-I, CJ-II and Lucino BB models. Air conditioning was standard on almost all models, but could be requested without. Manual adjusting windows were available on Pulsar Serie Rezzo, Pulsar CJ-I, CJ-II and Lucino BB models, otherwise electric windows were standard. Sunroof was available option on Pulsar Serie X1, Pulsar Serie X1R, Pulsar GTI, Pulsar VZR and Pulsar / Lucino SR-V models (hatch only). Manual controlled air conditioning controls were standard, climate control was available as option and standard on Pulsar Serie X1R, Pulsar GTI and Pulsar VZR.
An Autech tuned version of the Pulsar SRV and Lucino SRV was also available featuring the SR18DE block, but was actually a 2.0L (1998cc) engine. Indicative features included the placement of the spare-wheel on the rear boot lid and inclusion of plastic side mouldings over the wheel arches and large rear spoiler. As a result of shifting the spare-wheel to the boot lid, the number plate had to be relocated in the rear bumper, meaning a bumper was produced specific for this model.

4-door sedan In 2000, Nissan launched the N16 Pulsar, which included a compact MPV version (the Nissan Almera Tino or Nissan Tino) for the first time. The Wingroad continues to be sold as the Pulsar Wagon or Almera Traveller in many countries. To keep the Bluebird nameplate alive, Nissan shifted it to the four-door version of the Pulsar, and named it the Nissan Bluebird Sylphy for the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM).
In the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Indonesia, the Bluebird Sylphy is sold as the Nissan Sentra. In New Zealand and Thailand, the five-door Pulsar is imported from the UK, while the four-door model is essentially a rebadged Bluebird Sylphy. Consequently, each body style has a different front end. In Thailand, Singapore, and China, the N16 Bluebird Sylphy is sold as the Nissan Sunny.
In Indonesia, the Bluebird Sylphy or Pulsar is known as Sentra 1.8 Super Saloon. This model is for private use and sold between 2002 and 2004. It has standard ABS, dual SRS airbag, leather interior, and CD player with MP3. The facelifted model N16 is Sunny Neo 1.6, and intended for taxi use only.
For 2004, the N16 Bluebird Sylphy and Pulsar got facelift with revised grille, and a whole new rear end with "Teana-like" taillights. The N16 Sunny and Sentra were also received totally new front end.
After the Japanese production of Bluebird Sylphy G10 and Pulsar N16 were discontinued, the Sentra N16 is still manufactured and sold in the Philippines and Malaysia. The models for Malaysia are SG and SG-L, with the choice of Comfort or Luxury Package. The Sunny is continued to be offered in Singapore. Trim levels are EX Saloon, Super Saloon, and Luxury Edition.

In Japan, the Nissan Tiida hatchback and Tiida Latio sedan replaced the Pulsar in 2004. The Tiida range was introduced in Australia and New Zealand in early 2006, certain European markets in 2007, and also the United States, as the Versa. In 2005 a concept car called the Nissan AZEAL debuted at the Detroit Auto Show. The Azeal, a front wheel drive sport coupe aimed at the youth market, is described as a successor to the Pulsar NX.
[edit] Australia
In Australia and New Zealand, Nissan continued to use the "Pulsar" name for the N16. Four-door sedan and five-door hatchback versions were offered.
Trim levels were LX, ST, Q and Ti. Engine choices consisted of a 1.6-litre (QG16DE) or a 1.8-litre (QG18DE) four-cylinder with 16 valves. Power output was 88 kW (118 hp) and 94 kW (126 hp). The four-door was available in four trim levels - an LX with the 1.6, the ST and Ti with the 1.8-litre engine as standard, and a Q version with the 1.8 motor and a sportier level of trim, including a rear spoiler and alloy wheels.
In the five-door range there was no LX version, this being four-door only. Nissan launched the hatchback model with the ST trim level and a sporty Q version. As such, all hatches were 1.8-litre powered. The base-model LX sedan came with a driver's airbag, air-conditioning, remote locking and power mirrors, although no anti-lock brakes (ABS) or power windows were offered. The ST five-door gained an extra front airbag, whereas the four-door model did not have one as standard.
In Ti form, the four-door gained both front airbags, ABS, climate-control air-conditioning, alloy wheels and power windows. The Q model was similar to the Ti four-door, although there were slight discrepancies between the sedan and hatch, with the latter version gaining an extra air-bag and 15-inch alloy wheels versus the 14-inch alloys on the sedan.

The body is based on the Nissan Pulsar (aka Sunny) N14 3-door hatchback model, but can be distinguished by the large rear wing and bonnet scoop. It has an ATTESA 4WD system (also used on some U12 & U13 Bluebird models), and a unique variant of the SR20DET engine (not used on any other car). Contents 1 Models

Main versions:
There were 2 versions of the Nissan GTI-R sold to the general public:
GTI-RA: aka RA / Alpha / Road / Luxury = MODEL NUMBER: EBYNRVFN14xxxx
GTI-RB: aka RB / Beta / Rally / Homologation = MODEL NUMBER: EBYNRRFN14xxxx
(The model number is located on the VIN plate on the firewall in the engine bay).
RHD vs LHD models: RHD The right hand drive versions were manufactured in Japan between August 1990 until November 1994. The total number produced during those 4 years was between 13,000 and 15,000. It is unclear how many of them were RA and RB models (see below for differences). The commonly-quoted figure of 5,000 applies to the first year of production (1990–91), in which Nissan had to fulfill under FIA regulations (5000 models total, with 500 of them homologated) in order to enter as a manufacturer in the WRC. They were priced at ¥2,270,000. LHD The left hand drive models (badged as Sunny) had the different chassis number of EGNN14 and were produced until January 1995. No verifiable evidence has been available of the details (numbers/dates/etc) of LHD versions produced, but it is generally accepted that less than 1000 were in total. They were officially sold in Germany, The Netherlands, Iceland, Italy and France (possibly other countries, but details are unconfirmed).
RA models:
About half way through the production (August 1992), Nissan made a range of cosmetic changes to the RA model. Although not advertised as such, they were extensive enough (around 10 items) to be noticeable as a different phase or series and are clearly defined by chassis numbers RNN14-100000 and above.
RB models:
The homologated model was specifically built to be used for motorsport (Group N rallying in particular). They had the luxury trimmings (such as air conditioning and power windows) removed as standard, and the simple interior trim from the base model Pulsar which reduced the curb weight by 30 kg (66 lb) to 1,190 kg (2,624 lb). Some of the luxury items were available as an option. The engine remained the same as the RA model, but there were a few mechanical changes such as a close-ratio gearbox and a front lsd instead of the open diff from the RA model.
Other versions: NISMO There were several RB versions produced with special Nismo plates (total 21, confirmed by NISMO, Japan), which featured many of the Nismo rally options (suspension, LSD differentials, seats, roll cage, foot rests, etc). Some were used by Nissan as promotional cars, but they could be ordered by private buyers as a Nismo "Complete Car" and were priced at ¥3,140,000. GROUP A The Group A Rally Cars were not sold to the general public. They were specifically built and used for the WRC by the now defunct NME (Nissan Motorsports Europe) as their Works cars. After NME was disbanded, the cars were sold to private buyers, predominately in Europe, where some made their way into Rallycross events. Tony Bardy is currently still competing in UK rallies using the "J3" NME car. SUNNY Sunny was the badge used for the European-delivered EGNN14-chassis (both RHD & LHD) models. Their power specifications (220 PS / 162 kW and 267 Nm / 197 lb·ft) were slightly lesser due to different fuel and ignition maps in the ecu to compensate for the lower octane fuel available in those areas. The EGNN14 also had a different rear number plate surround. In 1992 they were priced in the UK at £20,553.
[edit] WRC History
After producing the required 5,000 examples (500 of them being homologation (RB) models), Nissan entered the GTI-R under Group A rules in the FIA WRC as a factory team (Nissan Motorsport Europe - NME) in 1991 & 1992.
NME only competed in selected rallies during both years (ones they thought had the highest potential for good results), but the expected initial success was not forthcoming, and they never won a WRC Group A rally in the GTI-R. Nissan abandoned the campaign in 1992 after only 9 attempts, funding was redirected to Le Mans and the development of the R390, and NME moved to the FWD Sunny GTI in the WRC F2 category (A7 class) where they had better success with Alister McRae winning the 1995 BRC. Much has been written about the reason for the GTI-R's Group-A failure. The most notable being the uncompetitive Dunlop tyres, the inefficiency of the top-mounted intercooler when engine power was increased to Group A standards (especially in hot weather), and the political and cultural issues between Nissan Japan and the newly created NME (Nissan Motorsport Europe).

NME did not enter Group N (Production) cars in the WRC, but other factory-backed Nissan teams did between 1991 and 1993. Most notable were the Nissan Belgium Rally Team with lead driver Grégoire De Mévius, and a Japanese entry (team unconfirmed) driven by Hiroshi Nishiyama.
The GTI-R dominated the Group N Championship (FIA Cup for Drivers of Production Cars) in 1992, taking both 1st and 2nd places. 1992 Round 3 - 26th Rallye de Portugal Grégoire De Mévius - 3rd (13th overall) 1992 Round 4 - 40th Martini Safari Rally Kenya Hiroshi Nishiyama - 3rd (16th overall) 1992 Round 6 - 39th Acropolis Rally Grégoire De Mévius - 1st (9th overall) 1992 Round 8 - 12th Rally Argentina Hiroshi Nishiyama - 2nd (9th overall)

Grégoire De Mévius - DNF (Engine) 1992 Round 14 - 48th Lombard RAC Rally Grégoire De Mévius - 2nd (14 overall) These results clearly show that the GTI-R had the ability to be a successful rally car at Production Class level.
[edit] Owners Clubs
Being such a rare-but-attainable street performance car, there is a dedicated following of enthusiasts around the world.
The first known RNN14-specific owners club was established in Japan in 1993.
The first known English-speaking community was established in 1999 (initially through oneList, which evolved through eGroups and finally Yahoo! Groups).
Countries with the largest owners club membership are Japan, UK, Australia and New Zealand - all with dedicated online communities based around forums.
The GTI-R has also been imported (under low-volume compliance schemes and motorsport-import rules) into many other countries including Canada, USA, Ireland, Israel, Lebanon, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Trinidad, Barbados, Jamaica, Singapore, Malaysia, Zimbabwe, Canary Islands and Russia.

window.yzq_d['IY06QFf4eEE-']='&U=12br4n4jo%2fN%3dIY06QFf4eEE-%2fC%3d-1%2fD%3dOEM%2fB%3d-1%2fV%3d0'; Nissan Pulsar GTI-R (1990 - 1994) Monday October 24 (First written on 2005-10-24) Models Covered: 2.0 3DR HATCHBACK 1990-1994 PULSAR GTI-R (JAPAN) 1991-1994 SUNNY GTI-R (UK)BY ANDY ENRIGHTWord of mouth is a strange thing. Certain products can, with little or no promotion from their manufacturers, rapidly build into items of cult status. Credibility counts here, and in the case of the Nissan Pulsar GTi-R, this is a car with credibility oozing from every bulge, scoop and intake. Following in the footsteps of Nissans Skyline GT-R, the Pulsar or Sunny as UK cars were incongruously dubbed GTi-R shared the Skylines hardcore all-wheel drive and turbocharged ethos. In many ways its the ultimate in function over form, and GTi-R owners tend to be a pragmatic bunch. No its not pretty, nor does it wear a sexy badge, but thats all part of the appeal. Call it inverse snobbery if you will, but the Pulsar GTi-R is refreshingly unpretentious. BMWs and Audis that can show this little Nissan a clean pair of heels are few and far between. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value Used examples are relatively easy to come by if you look in the right places and most of them will be Pulsar models imported from Japan rather than the slightly less powerful Sunny GTi-R cars that were imported to this country between 1992 and 1994. Dont let that put you off. Do some research, buy from a reliable outlet and you should land a performance bargain.Think of the Pulsar as a regular Japanese shopping hatch with a trick up its sleeve and you wont be far wrong. And thats part of the appeal. Its easy to get into and out of, it can seat five, it has a decently sized boot and you can see out of the thing. Okay, so the scoops, the firm ride and the throbbing engine may give the game away, but when the time comes to acquaint throttle pedal with carpet, the Pulsar switches personality and turns into a monster. The interior is fairly ordinary with swathes of black plastic, but the bucket seats grip front passengers tenaciously and the increments on the speedometer remind you this is no ordinary hatch.Prices start from as little as 2,500 for the Pulsar, making it one of the most outrageous performance bargains around. With comparable performance and handling to a Ford Escort RS Cosworth, examples of which are hard to find below 9,000, the Pulsar is rightly popular amongst keen drivers. Whats more, many of these imported cars are reasonably low mileage too, although mile for mile Japanese cars tend to have an even tougher time of it than British models due to crippling congestion. The 220bhp UK cars start at around 4,500. Whichever model you choose, be prepared to be stung for insurance, most brokers rating the Pulsar at Group 20.The engines on GTi-Rs tend to be very tough little units, easily capable of shrugging off 100,000 miles. At first they sound very tappety, but this is due to the fact that they use a cam chain rather than a belt. Many owners cant resist using a bleed valve or a boost controller as a cheap way of upping power. These cheap methods promise to raise power to around 260bhp but they have a downside. The intercooler on the GTi-R is placed atop the engine in the hottest part of the bay and often struggles to supply air at higher boost pressures. A favourite modification is to move it to the front of the engine and to install a higher capacity fuel pump. In hot weather at low speeds the GTi-Rs response can feel a little sluggish. The gearbox and clutch tend to be fine for standard cars, although if youre uprating power, the clutch should also be uprated. Suspension isnt a problem, although many owners will drop the ride height of the car by up to 50mm and add aftermarket alloys to get rid of the standard cars rather unfashionable gap between wheel and arch. When giving the car the once over check the clutch isnt squeaking. The GTi-R uses a hydraulic system so a squeak often indicates that the pedal box has broken away from the bulkhead. Engage the gears with the engine running and the clutch depressed. If the clutch slips, walk away its a pricey engine out job to change. Brakes should bite well, but the standard Nissan discs and pads are prone to fade. Bodywork should be fine, although the one place to check for rust is around the rear arch extensions. The Pulsar wont be as corrosion resistant as Sunny variants. Also check for crash damage. There are a few curious characteristics common to the GTi-R that you may want to look out for. The cross bracing in the roof can rattle against the roof itself. This annoying fault requires the headlining to be removed and the spar to be rebounded. Cars with sunroofs escape this fault. Almost all GTi-Rs have lazy drivers window winding mechanisms and plenty suffer from vibrating doors at speed. Cures for this include partially opening the sunroof and replacing the door seals.Parts for the Sunny and Pulsar GTi-R are commonly available on internet web rings. Trawl the message boards, join a few clubs and you should easily turn up the bits and pieces you need. A number of aftermarket tuners specialise in the GTi-R so you certainly wont feel alone!Although it was the Ford Escort Cosworth and the Lancia Delta Integrale that raked in all the glory, the Pulsar GTi-R is arguably a better ownership proposition than both of these icons and it can certainly more than hold its own on the road. Take power to weight ratio. The Pulsar pumps out 189bhp per tonne whereas its contemporaries such as the Integrale 16v at 163bhp/tonne or the Toyota Celica GT4 at 134bhp/tonne dont stand a chance. Bear in mind that todays crop of super hatches cant beat this. A Ford Focus RS manages 169bhp/tonne and a Honda Civic Type-R 166. Not even mega-money specials like the VW Golf R32 or the Audi S3 can touch the little Nissan. Performance figures for the standard car are 0-60 in 5.4 seconds and a top speed of 143mph although such cars are relatively rare. A more indicative time for a 260bhp boosted car is around 4.9 seconds to 60mph and top speed nudging 150mph dependent on gearing. Handling is well up to scratch as well, with no nasty surprises in store. On wet roads the GTi-R will eventually understeer, but with more commitment will drift all of a piece. On dry surfaces the standard tyres will squirm a little if cornered very hard, but most will run on low-profile rubber and will grip like a leech. The four-wheel drive system isnt as clever as that in the Skyline, being a mechanical 50-50 split front and rear, but its undeniably effective. The Nissan Pulsar/Sunny GTi-R has to be the most cost effective way of putting a Porsche in its place. If you are prepared to shop around, look at a few and understand their characteristics, theres no reason why you cant have a giant killer in your garage for less than you think. No, theyre not particularly subtle and they can cost a fair bit to run, but the GTi-R is built tough and has a practical side to it. At least thats how you can sell it to your other half.
