6 ISSUES FOR £1 Search Car Reviews: You're in - Car Reviews: First Drives Nissan Note Nissan Note 1.4 SE We haven't seen such impressive use of space since the Honda Jazz. But is Nissan's latest offering worthy of Note? Auto Express Car Reviews Note is nimble and agile on the road, while 44.8mpg economy is impressive By Chris ThorpMarch 2006 Rating: The bigger a car is on the outside, the more spacious it is on the inside. It stands to reason... or does it? It used to be that large cars were the roomiest, but designers have got smart, shrink-wrapping practical cabins with space-efficient bodies.King of the logic-defying hatches is Honda's Jazz, which has been tough to beat since its launch in 2001. However, Nissan has been readying its own musically named contender. We grabbed the keys to one of the first new Notes to arrive in the UK to see if it's in tune with the needs of its customers.Slotting the Note into conventional new car classes is impossible. It shares its platform with the Micra as well as Renault's latest Clio and Modus, but it has dimensions all of its own. It's shorter but has a longer wheelbase than a VW Golf, and there's a much lower roofline than on a conventional MPV.The distinctive design will divide opinion, but the Note's shape only makes real sense when you climb into the back. A sliding bench means rear passengers have lots of legroom and sit comfortably with bags of space.Lift the tailgate and the boot initially looks cramped, until you pull out the removable false floor which reveals another deep section. The panels are even reversible, with a wipe-clean surface on one side. Unfortunately, it's the driver that suffers the only ergonomic flaw. With no reach adjustment on the steering, it's difficult to get the optimum position behind the wheel. Thankfully, the rest of the dashboard is sensibly laid out and well built. On the move, the Note continues to impress. The Nissan feels nimble and agile nipping in and out of city traffic, although at higher speeds there's no shortage of body roll, while the direct steering is a little light. Our car was powered by the entry-level 1.4-litre petrol engine. With only 87bhp, it has to be worked hard for swift progress, but it's a relatively free-revving unit. Combined economy of 44.8mpg and low CO2 emissions of 150g/km will be compensation enough for most. The standard fit five-speed manual gearbox has a similar notchy feel to the Micra. Instead of giving the Note a meaty shift, engineers have concentrated on making all the controls easy to use.Prices that start from a competitive £9,995 - with the diesel available from £10,995 - will also keep budget- conscious buyers happy. If you are shopping for a top-value family hatchback, the latest addition to the Nissan range is definitely worthy of Note. Not since the launch of the Honda Jazz have we seen such impressive use of cabin space. Only the lack of pace from the entry-level engine detracts from this top-class family package. AT A GLANCE With the Almera's days now numbered, the Note is one of three models to replace it. There will also be an all-wheel- drive crossover, plus a larger, more conventional hatchback. 6 ISSUES FOR £1 Search Car Reviews: You're in - Car Reviews: Long Term Tests Nissan Note Nissan Note 1.6 SVE Our Nissan note has made a big impression. But will the honeymoon last for the latest arrival on our fleet? Auto Express Car Reviews Flexible, funky Note has proved a big hit with Dawn and daughter Natasha By Dawn TennantMarch 2007 Will size matter? That's the question I'll be trying to answer over the coming months, having swapped a Vauxhall Zafira for our new long-term Nissan Note. The car, aimed squarely at young families, is very proud of its funky styling and versatile layout. Early impressions are certainly favourable. It looks good from the outside and, thanks to the attractive Intense Blue metallic paintwork, the Note really stands out from the crowd. Inside, at first glance, the boot seems small. But once you have lifted the Flexi-boards - removable, wipe-down sections that can be positioned in various combinations - there is plenty of space for the shopping. And delicate items can be safely stored below the boards, without the risk of being crushed by heavy bags perched on top.The keyless entry system is great when my hands are full, and I also appreciated it after a late-night trip to the theatre - I felt much safer not having to fish around for keys in a dark street. However, the ignition itself is more awkward. It does turn easily, but a button on the side has to be pushed in when switching off, and the action takes some getting used to. So does the alarm that is activated, should you forget. In town, though, the Note is a pleasure to drive, with light steering and a smooth, responsive 1.6-litre petrol engine. The drilled alloy pedals fitted to our SVE variant look really stylish, but they were very slippery in wet weather. My teenage daughter is pleased there's a six-disc CD changer mounted in the dash, but can't believe how long it takes to load and unload - the mechanism is rather slow. Still, the secret cubby under the passenger seat is a great place in which to hide the disc cases, and we don't miss the noise they made in the Zafira, sliding around in the door pockets. Our Note has got off to a good start, but only time will tell how we fare with the space - there's less than we had in the Vauxhall. The big test will be our first long trip with my partner and his sons. Hopefully, there won't be much grumbling from the back seats! One side is carpet and the other plastic, which is ideal for muddy boots. Keyless entry system: not having to bother with keys when your hands are full or you are returning to the car at night is great. And the boot release button works independently. Styling: Nissan has done a really good job of disguising the Note’s square lines. I love the way in which the rear light housing continues on to the roof, for instance. The funky individual design certainly makes this model distinctive on the road. CD changer: having a six-disc system in the dashboard is welcome. However, this set-up takes ages to load, eject or simply change CDs. The motors are very slow to operate, making loads of whirring and clicking noises before anything happens. Auto Trader Ten Point Test Rating – 73%
Just because you need a family car doesn’t mean you have to drive something that looks dull – that much is clear from the eccentric styling of the new Nissan Note.
It may be built in Britain, at Nissan’s renowned Sunderland plant, but that alone won’t be enough to win over British buyers. Does this oddball car have some new and exciting to bring to this hotly contested end of the market?
1. Looks 6/10
The Note has a funky but flawed appearance. I loved the daring rear lights, extravagantly raked across the top of the roof. But the headlights just seem to gawp gormlessly at passers by – and the bubble-shaped side lights are very peculiar.
It didn’t help that our model came in ‘Aztec Yellow’, which might have been more accurately described as ‘Depreciation Yellow’. Avoid it like the plague.
2. Looks inside 8/10
Things are a little easier on the eye inside. The centre console is today and economical on space, and there are plenty of elegant circular features (vents, dials, etc…) dotted here and there.
I particularly liked the neat door handles and the curves inside the door pockets – ideal for chucking a bottle of water in. Some of the plastics felt a little cheap, though.
3. Practicality 9/10
The Note is all about practicality – it’s roomy and flexible. The rear seats slide back and forth to maximise boot space or leg room depending on what you need. In the boot a pair of slats can be moved to provide useful storage room for tall items.
The high rear roofline makes the back of the car reasonably comfortable even for adults. The folding tables and extra power socket in the SE and SVE versions of the car are also handy.
4. Ride and Handling 6/10
I found the ride to be stiff, verging on harsh. Negotiating speed bumps at anything but the slowest crawl proved immensely uncomfortable – not a good trait for a vehicle with city car aspirations.
Although the ride was poor the handling wasn’t too bad and body roll was minimal despite the car having fairly high sides. It wasn’t a particularly fun or exciting drive, but one thankfully devoid of any nasty surprises.
5. Performance 6/10
We tested the 1.4-litre petrol engine which is smallest power unit on offer. Its breathless 88hp proved just too weedy for a car of the Note’s proportions even unladen. With a full load on board performance slumped from dreary (0-60mph in 13.1s) to positively lethargic. The 1.6-litre petrol or 1.5-litre turbo diesel would be better options.
However the nimble gearbox was a pleasure to use and the brakes very sharp and strong.
6. Running Costs 8/10
The Note’s combined fuel efficiency was a very strong 44.8 mpg but more important is the urban fuel cycle figure. This was a wholly respectable 35.8mpg.
With group four insurance and CO2 emissions of 150g/km you’re looking at a very reasonable runner, though depreciation for a new model is hard to predict.
7. Reliability 8/10
It’s hard to judge exactly how the Note will fare with it being a new model. The test car felt simple and sturdy so there shouldn’t be anything to worry about.
8. Safety 7/10
A standard Note comes with front and side airbags and ISOFIX mountings for child seats in the rear. But I would have liked to see more of these features as standard across the range, such as side airbags and anti-whiplash head rests, presently only on the SE and SVE models.
The SVE model is the only grade which gets the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP).
9. Equipment 8/10
The middle-level SE specification levels was decently appointed at a fair price. I liked the air conditioning system with pollen filter and wasn’t at all troubled by the lack of climate control.
I also liked having steering wheel controls for the stereo and the trip computer, even if they did feel a bit cheap.
10. X-Factor 7/10
So the Note is a funky, family-friendly city car. But it doesn’t quite tick all the boxes for me, particularly the asthmatic engine which makes long journeys frustrating and motorways wearisome.
Flexibility is the strongest feature in the Note’s favour. The Note would especially suit a young family, but you’ll have to sacrifice driving pleasure for that practicality.
