6 ISSUES FOR £1 Search Car Reviews: You're in - Car Reviews: Car Group Tests Nissan Note Acenta Supermini-MPV award winner has space to spare November 2008 Half supermini, half MPV... The Nissan Note is the Frankenstein’s creation of a frustrated family man. There’s no doubt its combination of small size, tiny price and big practicality appeals. Buyers have taken to the Note, and it’s even held on to the coveted Best Supermini-MPV award in Auto Express’s New Car Honours for two years running. The Nissan is the largest car here – and that’s clear at a glance. Its upright, people carrier-inspired shape is closer to the Jazz than the low-slung Fiesta, and it arguably has the more attractive lines of the two tall models. This is particularly true from the rear, where the distinctive light clusters stretching over the roof help it stand out.Climb inside and you will begin to see just how the Nissan can carry such a low price tag despite being the biggest car on test: the cabin simply can’t match the quality of the others. The dashboard borrows many features from the smaller Micra and much of the switchgear, along with the dials, is beginning to look tired. You’re better off sitting in the back, where the Japanese model has taken a leaf out of the Jazz’s book for versatility. The Note’s party trick is its sliding bench, which varies legroom from 640mm to 790mm. So when you don’t have much luggage, you can offer passengers more space than either rival. The boot could also teach Ford a lesson in versatility. It’s trimmed in durable plastics, and comes with a neat false floor, similar to the Jazz’s. As a result, you have the choice of a flat luggage space with no load lip or a deeper boot for larger items. While diesel power makes great sense in this hard-working little family car, our Note had a 1.4-litre petrol engine under the bonnet. The unit is soon to be revised to reduce its emissions, yet it feels reasonably responsive despite the Nissan’s 1,167kg weight. The Note is comfortable around town and a capable motorway cruiser, too. Only when the road gets more challenging does the chassis begin to reveal a few flaws. Hit a mid-corner bump and the wheel jolts in your hands as the soft set-up causes the car to buck and lurch around where both the Jazz and Fiesta retain composure.Fast roundabouts soon see the Nissan’s nose pushing wide, too. There’s not a lot of fun to be had in the Note; where its rivals feel taut and engaging, it’s much happier to remain at a more sedate pace. So, where will the Nissan fit into this test? Whether or not its top supermini-MPV title is under threat depends on how you pigeonhole the new Jazz. The Honda’s larger size takes it closer to Note territory, yet bosses insist they’re targeting normal superminis. That won’t be important to potential buyers, though – if you want versatility on a budget, be sure to add the Note to your shortlist. Note heads space race, and won Best Supermini-MPV in our New Car Honours 2008. AT A GLANCE: It’s great value, superbly practical and offers more than adequate dynamics... but that wasn’t enough for the Note. While the Nissan is worth a look, the Jazz is a more modern package if you can live with the shortfall in load capacity and the Fiesta is more desirable. SCORES Styling: Interior: Driving: Costs: Green: ECONOMY The practical Nissan splits the Honda and Ford on price. Add up the figures, though, and it has the weakest residual value and the highest servicing costs – so you clearly need to think beyond the initial outlay. The Note won’t be music to the ears of company car users, either, as its emissions are the worst in this test. Fleet drivers should wait for the soon-to-be-launched lower CO2 version. Look at the specs and you’ll also spot another quirk. Acenta trim doesn’t include stability control – and the set-up can’t even be specified as an option. ENVIRONMENT A revised version of the Note’s 1.4-litre petrol engine goes on sale next month, with CO2 emissions reduced from 150g/km to 139g/km. That will bring the British-built model in line with the competition. 6 ISSUES FOR £1 Search Car Reviews: You're in - Car Reviews: Car Group Tests Nissan Note Acenta dCi Will supermini-MPV bodystyle give the wild card the edge here? August 2008 According to Nissan, the Note was the brainchild of a designer who was worried that the arrival of his first child would mean he could no longer drive an attractive car.He wanted to combine style and space – and the Note was the result. Its short overhangs and high waistline give a sportier profile than most supermini-MPVs, and unique details such as the boomerang tail-lights help it stand out from the crowd. With the longest wheelbase and shortest body here, it avoids its estate rivals’ stretched-out profile. And, crucially, cabin space is good, too. Up front the seats are high, and despite no steering wheel reach adjustment, it’s easy to find a comfortable driving position. While the dash isn’t especially inspiring, it’s well built and there is plenty of stowage. A lidded cubby houses a stereo auxiliary input and there’s an underseat bin, too. The clever glovebox is also air-conditioned, but you only get four airbags as standard, and stability control isn’t available, despite it being fitted on higher trim levels.Plenty of thought has gone into the rest of the car, and the rear bench slides to optimise leg or load space. Push it back, and the seats have the most room here, although this makes the boot nearly 50 per cent shorter than the Clio’s. Even with the seats pushed forward, it’s still 17mm behind.Crucially, this means double pushchairs and similar large family items are harder to accommodate. But for other purposes the Nissan’s luggage area is well thought out, as the seat backs fold flush with the split-level floor to create a flat load area. The reversible divider has carpet on one side and wipe-clean plastic on the other, and it hides a storage area beneath. So while the Note can’t quite match the estates’ ultimate capacity and boot length, its load space is versatile. An easy gearchange and electric power-steering which becomes progressively lighter at low speeds make the Note great around town, and it also copes well on longer trips. The wheel feels over-assisted, but the chassis is composed at speed and the handling is agile. The ride is supple, too, but unfortunately the suspension lets shocks through into the cabin on really bumpy roads.Surprisingly, the Note can’t match the Renault for engine refinement. They share the same 1.5-litre dCi, yet it is far noisier in the Nissan. Performance is evenly matched, but the French car also has lower emissions and better economy. While the Note is a practical family car, can its clever use of space make up for its compact dimensions? Sliding bench and clever storage could be trump cards for Nissan’s supermini-MPV. AT A GLANCE: A cleverly designed and well thought out family car from the Japanese manufacturer. The cabin is practical, it is easy to drive and the boot is highly versatile, too. SCORES Styling: Interior: Driving: Costs: Green: ECONOMY The Nissan is the cheapest, but some of the savings will be used up when it comes to servicing. A total of £860 for three visits is nearly £320 more than for the identically powered Clio. With a retained value prediction of 35.3 per cent, the Nissan suffers the worst depreciation of our group. Insurance costs are on a par with its rivals, though, and the lower list price means it’s a cheaper company car choice than the 207 SW or Fabia. What Car? says:4 stars out of 5 Read review Buyer's notes Target Price team says: There are four engines to choose from and even the entry-level, 1.4-litre, 87bhp petrol does a fine job. We rate its sprightly feel around town, and it never feels out of its depth on faster roads. The larger petrol engine is faster still, but fuel economy does drop off from 47.9mpg to 42.8mpg. The two diesels offer good economy and plenty of mid-range performance.Although the Note is pricier than many five-door superminis that you might consider as alternatives, low emissions and good fuel economy keep running costs competitive and it holds on to a healthy chunk of its value. The entry-level Visia model gets a CD player and electric front windows, but no air-con. Our favourite model is the 1.4 Acenta, it costs an extra £1350 over the entry model but we reckon it's worth spending the money. Air-conditioning, rear electric windows and full-length curtain airbags all join the equipment roster. Renault Modus The Nissan Note (kana:日産・ノート) is a mini MPV produced by the Japanese manufacturer Nissan. The Japanese version has been on sale since 2004, although the European model went to sale during 2006. The United Kingdom was the first country to have the Note launch there, on 1 March. The car shares some of its underpinnings with the Renault Modus, and is designed to compete with the Opel Meriva and Citroën C3 Picasso as well as the Renault Modus. It is manufactured at Nissan's plant in Sunderland, England, as an indirect successor to the conventional medium-sized Almera hatchback which ceased production at Sunderland in November 2006. The direct successor to the Almera in Europe is the Tiida; however it has not been officially imported to the United Kingdom, although it has been available since March 2009 with models sourced by the Arnold Clark dealership network from the Republic of Ireland.[1]
Another design detail of the car is the boomerang-shaped rear light clusters.
The Nissan Note used to be available in three specifications, the 'S', 'SE' and 'SVE'. The base model was equipped with full electric windows, alloy wheels and front fog lights or the Flexi-Board boot system. The SE saw the introduction of 16" Alloys, Air Con, front fog lights and Flexi-Board Boot and the SVE had Climate Control, Rear Privacy Glass, 17" Alloys and ESP. These models have been since replaced with the Visia, Acenta, Acenta R and the Tekna. The Visia is almost identical to the old 'S' model whereas the Acenta, Acenta R and Tekna now come complete with MP3 Auxiliary jack and Bluetooth Car Stereo as no cost options. In the UK the Note comes in five specifications; Visia, Visia+, Acenta, Acenta S, and Tekna. All models are fitted with 4 airbags, a single CD player, remote central locking, electric front windows, electric door mirrors and a sliding rear seat.
