As with other vehicles in this segment, the Murano combines the driving attributes of a car with the elevated seating position and versatility of a sport-utility vehicle. Also in its favor is a spacious interior, a powerful V6 engine and distinctive styling.Since its introduction in 2003, the Murano has been one of Nissan's best-selling SUVs. Particularly when compared with the rugged truck-based SUVs in Nissan's lineup, the Murano's classy, sculptural lines stand out. Rounded edges mask the crossover's substantial size, translating into a surprising amount of cargo and passenger space inside.A recent redesign for the Murano featured subtle styling changes and more significant mechanical and interior upgrades, but it generally adhered to the formula established by its predecessor. As ever, with its car-based platform and available on-road-biased all-wheel-drive system, the Murano is definitely not made for rock-crawling. But on the road, where most SUVs will stay anyway, the Murano is a smooth operator and certainly one of the smoothest of its breed.Current Nissan MuranoThe Nissan Murano brings liberal helpings of style and performance to the crossover SUV segment. All trims are available in either front- or all-wheel drive and the Murano packs a 3.5-liter V6 underneath its curvaceous hood that's good for 265 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. A vastly improved continuously variable transmission (CVT) is your only choice for putting this power to the ground. The character of the strong V6 engine is nicely complemented by the CVT, which is now among the best such units on the market. This pairing makes the Murano quite quick. Capable brakes and sharp handling round out the Murano's performance abilities, and they compare favorably with just about any vehicle in this segment. The current Murano gives up nothing to the competition inside, either, as its formerly marginal materials have been upgraded to near class-leading quality.Three trim levels are offered. The base S model is reasonably well-equipped, including dual-zone automatic climate control and a six-CD changer, but many desirable luxury and convenience items are grouped into packages, most of which aren't available on the S. The more expensive SL model adds a few niceties here and there, but what really gets you is expandability, as several options packages are made available for this trim. The top-of-the-line LE pours on the decadence, coming standard with just about every option on the Murano's list. Our editors have generally praised the Nissan Murano's sophisticated appearance, stylish and comfortable interior and sharp handling characteristics. Once a sluggish annoyance, the CVT's performance has been greatly improved for the current Murano. Our only concerns are the Murano's middling fuel economy, underwhelming cargo room and poor rearward visibility. Competing models may be better on one or both of these counts, but they probably won't offer the Murano's combination of performance and style.Used Nissan Murano ModelsThe current, second-generation Nissan Murano debuted as a redesigned model for 2009. A slight cosmetic face-lift was accompanied by numerous upgrades that addressed the shortcomings of the previous-generation's CVT operation as well as its lower-quality interior materials. For that first year, the top-of-the-line LE trim could only be had with all-wheel drive. The first-generation Nissan Murano was produced from 2003-'07. (The Murano was on hiatus for the 2008 model year.) At the time, its combination of an SUV-like high driving position and ample cargo room along with sedanlike handling and acceleration was virtually unprecedented. Today, the market is saturated with such vehicles, which have become known as "crossovers." In other words, the first Murano was a trendsetter in its day.The original Murano's styling -- an unmistakable offspring of Nissan's alliance with French automaker Renault -- was nothing if not distinctive, inside and out. Fortunately, it had an impressive array of hardware as well. All first-generation Muranos came with a 3.5-liter 245-hp V6, and a CVT was the only available transmission. Two trim levels were initially offered -- the luxury-oriented SL and sporty SE. A price-leading S model was added in 2005, offering fewer features for less coin. Even the S came well-equipped with dual-zone climate control, a CD player and (as of 2006) a 7-inch LCD display. The SL added such niceties as a power driver seat with adjustable lumbar support, while the SE rode on an exclusive sport-tuned suspension. Options included a roof rack, adjustable pedals, a Bose stereo, a sunroof and a DVD-based navigation system. In our reviews of the first-generation Nissan Murano, low-grade interior materials were among the few nits we could find to pick. Our one serious complaint concerned the reluctance of the CVT to play along with spirited drivers -- a flaw that was rectified in the second-generation car. Beyond those two shortcomings, the first-generation Murano was generally a class act. It was stylish, powerful, handled well and had an impressive array of optional pleasantries.Consumers interested in a used Murano should note that little changed mechanically on the first-generation Murano throughout its years of production. An update for 2006 brought subtle changes to the exterior trim and, for the interior, introduced new instrumentation and more elegant materials and color schemes. Previous to this, only minor equipment and trim level adjustments occurred. Reply #517 of 524 So glad I researched the Murano's by ritafch Oct 23, 2010 (9:44 am) My daughter turned 16 so we gave her my 03 altima which we bought new. It's been a great car no bad problems except replacing the alternator twice. 1st time in 08 then last in 10. I decided that I really liked the Murano's and was looking to buy a used one. I've been looking and test driving for only a week and was just about to drive about 3 hours away to look and possibly buy a 05. Through many conversations and video's with the owner I just knew this one was for me. A salesman with the Nissan dealership in Huntsville had called me many times wanting me to stop by and take a look at a couple of Murano's so I did just last night. While he went in to get the keys I was looking and admiring the 370 Z's and another salesman walked up and we started talking about the Z's, altima's and then Murano's. He told me that Nissan had extended the warranty on all makes of the Murano's and why. We went on talking until I think he realized that was probably to much information. I was very disappointed to hear what I was told caused I loved those SUV'S. I thanked him for bringing that to my intention cause no one else had. I even went to consumer reports and all I had found was reports on brake pads having to be replaced. I went ahead and test drove the 07 Murano and while we where driving I asked many questions and was told over and over what great cars these where. So either he didn't know or was just trying to make a sale. I would have considered another Altima if only I could trust I was being told the truth. I came home and researched and found all these issues with different customers and now I know I will continue looking into the Toyota 4 runners like my husband wanted to do to begin with. I will still admire the Murano's when I see them; for their looks only, and I thank God for he did answer my prayer. Reply #518 of 524 CVT cross-reference by nails2 Nov 23, 2010 (11:58 am) I have a 2004 Murano AWD. I'd like to swap the CVT with a later model. Can anyone tell me what's compatible? I need to pull the motor &etc (rear main seal and other problems). The CVT has been doing that surge thing, and I'm sure it's on borrowed time. I'm hoping for some bolt-up pnp swap from a junkyard front clip. Does anyone know what years will cross? Sorry if this is already posted somewhere -- I swear I tried to find it. Thnaks. -- Neal Reply #519 of 524 purchase transmission? by coconino Nov 23, 2010 (12:16 pm) I have a 2004 Murano w/186k mi. Transmission has displayed the usual hesitation in hot weather, fixed momentarily by restarting car. Currently, the car has an undiagnosable overheating problem and I've been recommended to rebuild/replace the engine and replace the transmission. Trading in, getting another car is not an option. We'd like to do this ourselves (SO fixes all his vehicles incl Range Rover), but I haven't been able to find replacement engines/transmissions online. Has anyone else been able to find engines/transmissions for purchase? Any suggestions? Reply #520 of 524 cross-reference, transmission purchase by coconino Nov 23, 2010 (12:21 pm) Great minds think alike, nails2. I hope we get replies to our posts. Reply #521 of 524 Re: Nissan CVT Customer Satisfaction Program - EXPIRED [mgiontaca] by mgiontaca Nov 23, 2010 (9:07 pm) Replying to: mgiontaca (Sep 12, 2010 3:27 pm) Follow-up: I contacted Nissan Consumer affairs and after several calls and paperwork submissions, they reimbursed me fully for my faulty CVT replaced in 2008. My hat's off to Nissan for this show of integrity. My faith in Nissan is restored. Since the program had officially ended before I called them, they didn't have to do "the right thing", but they did. However, I have some reservations about buying any new product without a "track record", so to speak. Have there been any problems with the CVT s in the new Muranos? I have noticed an air scoop for cooling air to the transmission. It is located on the driver`s side of the vehicle right behind the front bumper. I can`t help but wonder how this transmission will hold up pulling 3,500 lbs. in 100 degree weather. The 60,000 mile warranty is nice, but what about life after warranty? But I can tell you my story. I was moving cross country in my barnd new Murano. I loaded the car up with about 850lbs of steel plates (my gym) and some other essentials and left from Boston for SF. I did the trip in 2.5 days avg about 1000 miles a day. A couple of notes on my experience: 1) CVT + Cruise is awsome. None of the jerkiness you get in other cruise cars, the CVT just varies to keep it dead steady as double checked by the GPS 2) Engine is surprisingly powerful, I had no trouble blowing by people going up and down mountains in the rockies. Juts purchased a new 2004 murano - love it BUT while driving along at 65mph it seemed to "come out of gear". Instantly we lost power and pulled over to the side of the road - turned car off then back on it worked great for another 200 miles or so and it did the same thing - almost causing an accident! I've had the new murano (1500miles) back to the dealer 6 times - they thus far have been unable to find and fix the problem. We are scared to drive the car as you can imagine! I think it's a transmission problem but they don't know what is going on. Am I think I'm the only murano owner whose had this problem? I'm thinking about claiming lemon law if they can't fix it this time! Timothy22. Nissan, in the latest example in setting industry standards of automotive technology, offers the first North American availability of its advanced Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) beginning December 2002 with the introduction of the all-new 2003 Nissan Murano crossover sport utility vehicle. The Xtronic CVT, which comes standard in Murano, is mated to a 245-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 producing 246 lb-ft torque - a new record for CVT torque capacity. The Xtronic CVT transforms conventional transmission design, operating as essentially one gear - resulting in a smoother, more efficient operation. Arguably the most technologically advanced transmission in automotive history, the Xtronic CVT operates more seamlessly when compared to even the very best automatic transmissions. Nissan has a strong heritage of leadership and innovation in technology, a reputation that is upheld with the Xtronic CVT, said Bill Kirrane, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division. The Xtronic CVT is a superior automotive transmission that provides outstanding efficiency and smooth, powerful driving performance. How it Works While automatic or manual transmissions use multiple gear sets with an integral clutch and bands to achieve separate gear ratios, the Xtronic CVT replaces those discrete gear ratios with an infinitely adjustable ratio design. Instead of using fixed gears, Xtronic CVT transmits power through two variable diameter pulleys and a high-strength steel belt. The Xtronic CVT changes ratios smoothly and seamlessly with no perceptible pauses, jerks or lurches virtually eliminating traditional shift shock. During acceleration, the pulleys move in opposite directions and the steel belt rides on a smaller diameter, closer to the axis; when the pulleys are close, the steel belt rides on a larger diameter, near the outer rim. The pulleys are controlled to expand and contract in opposite directions so the ratio of the drive diameters between the two pulleys can be varied over a wide range, resulting in an infinitely variable drive ratio. The Xtronic CVT offers a spread of gear ratios between its lowest and highest range (2.371:1 to 0.439:1). At the heart of the Xtronic CVT is a high-strength steel belt, which is as strong as steel, but as flexible as a belt. The strength enables it to handle a high amount of torque input, fitting for Muranos V6 engine. Xtronic CVT Benefits Xtronic CVT brings a number of benefits that are immediately recognizable. The most obvious benefit is the quick response and smooth ratio changes, versus the clunk of a shifting transmission that is familiar to all drivers. In contrast, the Xtronic CVT is perfectly smooth it naturally changes gears discreetly and minutely such that the driver or passenger feels only steady acceleration. Another advantage of the Xtronic CVT is its powerful driving performance. CVT offers the convenience of an automatic with the performance similar to a manual. Due to its pulley and chain design, Xtronic CVT can maintain the ideal ratio to keep the engine in its optimal power range. This power is especially felt in mountainous driving ranges, as it can smoothly tailor the gearing to suit the hills, rather than constantly downshifting, searching for the appropriate gear. The Xtronic CVT also allows for improved fuel economy. By varying the gear ratio continuously, the Xtronic CVT suffers no power loss during shifting allowing the engine to operate under conditions of optimum efficiency. Thanks to these remarkable features, a CVT can improve fuel economy by approximately 10% over a conventional automatic transmission. As a result, the Murano has outstanding fuel economy estimates of 20/25 mpg City/Highway for 2WD models and 20/24 mpg City/Highway for Murano AWD models. A History in CVT Engineering Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has been a leader in CVT research since the 1970s and currently offers CVTs in Asia and Europe. In 1992, Nissan implemented the N-CVT on the March in Japan and subsequently developed the HYPER CVT in 1997 as the worlds first unit designed for application to front-wheel-drive cars fitted with 2.0-liter class engines. Today, Nissan sells about 180,000 vehicles per year equipped with CVT technology in Asia alone. We believe the new Nissan Murano, with its breakthrough styling, utility and technology, will have a huge impact on the crossover SUV class, said Kirrane. The Xtronic CVT gives Murano a competitive edge in this very competitive segment. A lot of unproven nonsense is out there concerning CVT problems. Nissan has recently extended their CVT warranty to 10 years on their vehicles as a statement of confidence. All the major manufacturers are following with their own CVT designs, or soon will be. Test drive and you will see how how CVT works and is a significant improvement. I just bought a 2010 Sentra with $3500 cash rebate and the thing drives better than my 2002 V6 Altima 3.5SE. Tremendous value. greenbee1000 4 weeks ago virensanchit 1 month ago @AndrewEastBeach1 ? what kind of problems? virensanchit 1 month ago gabrielx14h 1 month ago @cg8888 hahahaha gabrielx14h 1 month ago AndrewEastBeach1 4 months ago Nissan is starting to make me angry because they are starting to make certain models with a CVT transmission. They do not sell these certain models with regular automatic transmissions. The altima does sell have the option of a 6-speed manual, not sure about other models. This CVT transmission has so many problems. Other make's that have models with CVT transmissions do have the option of having a regular transmission but they would have to reprogram the whole car computer.
