(December 2010) Nissan Frontier Manufacturer Nissan Also called Nissan Navara Production 1997–present Predecessor Nissan D21 series Body style(s) 2-door truck 4-door truck Nissan Frontier is the name for the D22 and D40 generations of Nissan pickup trucks in North, Central and South America and the Philippines. The line was started in 1998, and its immediate predecessor is the D21 Nissan Hardbody truck. As of 2002, the D22 series Nissan Truck is no longer sold in Japan, with the primary market having been relocated to North America, built at the Smyrna, Tennessee Nissan factory. Nissan was the pioneer of the Hardbody or Nissan Navara since 1986. The first was the D21, considered to be a small pick up. After more than 10 years with the D21, the second generation Navara was manufactured from 1998 and went until 2005 which was classed as a compact sized pick up. It was replaced with the bigger, taller, longer D40, which Nissan now considers to be a mid-size pick up truck. The Navara gets its name from the Navarre region of northern Spain, and the European version is built at the Nissan factory in Barcelona. Nissan first offered the Frontier with a 4-cylinder engine, the KA24DE, but added the V6 engine, the VG33E in 1999. Elsewhere, the Frontier was also known as the Nissan Navara That changed, with the introduction of the 2000 Frontier Crew Cab. The Crew Cab was the first compact pickup to offer a 4-door body-style in North America. Until that point, crew cabs were heavy duty versions of full-size trucks and were mainly used as commercial vehicles, although four-door compact pickups existed in Asia and Europe for decades. For 2001, Nissan facelifted the Frontier, introducing bolder styling in an effort to make it more appealing to younger buyers in its second generation. The Frontier was completely redone after the 2004 model year, which later resulted in the suspension of the regular cab model, indefinitely. However, Nissan continues to build the D22 on a low scale, and is known as "Pickup". The first D22 Navaras (from 1997 to 2000) have a slightly different cosmetic appearance to the newer models (2001–2004). The first series of D22's had larger (QD32) 3.2 litre normally aspirated Diesel engines producing 75 kW. The second series has 4 available engine types. They were as follows: 2.4 litre, DOHC, 16V, 4 cylinder, producing 110 kW (148 hp) @ 5600 rpm and 208 N·m (153 lb·ft) @ 2600 rpm. 2.5 litre, DOHC, 16V, 4 cylinder, producing 100 kW (134 hp) @ 4000 rpm and 304 N·m (224 lb·ft) @ 2000 rpm. 3.0 litre, DOHC, 16V, 4 cylinder, producing 110 kW (148 hp) @ 3400 rpm and 314 N·m (232 lb·ft) @ 2000 rpm. 3.3 litre, SOHC, 12V, 6 cylinder, producing 125 kW (168 hp) @ 4800 rpm and 266 N·m (196 lb·ft) @ 2800 rpm. A 4.0 L VQ-family V6, the VQ40DE, is the standard engine, and it produces a respectable 265 hp (198 kW) with 284 ft·lbf (385 N·m) of torque. Also available is the QR25DE four-cylinder engine, which is also found in the Nissan Altima. A six-speed manual is standard with a five-speed automatic optional. Both rear and four-wheel drive are available. Traction control and hill-descent control are also available. The Frontier is called Navara when sold in Europe. The stronger version has 403 N·m (297 lb·ft) of torque. 2009 Suzuki Equator extended cab Suzuki has begun selling a Frontier-based mid-sized pickup that is produced by Nissan North America at the Smyrna plant.[8] The truck debuted at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show as the Suzuki Equator.[9] For 2009 the Frontier will get a face lift with more options, colors, and new wheels. The Nismo model will be replaced by a new PRO-4X model. [edit] D40 Navara In the UK, the current Navara is available with the largest bed space and a market leading[citation needed] 174 bhp (130 kW; 176 PS) (169 bhp (126 kW; 171 PS) on post September '06 vehicles with the introduction of the Euro IV compliant engine). With its four specs, the S, SE, Outlaw and Aventura, the Navara has the ability to cover all market areas. The Aventura trim package is nicely equipped, to include such items as leather upholstery, Dual Zone Climate Control, 6 CD/MP3 changer and satellite navigation as standard. In Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, the D40 Navara has a few differences from the UK versions. There are 2 engines available, the popular common-rail 2.5 liter Turbo-charged Diesel engine and the V-6 petrol. The Diesel engine in 4WD models produces 128 kW (172 hp) at 4000 rpm and 403 N·m (297 lb·ft) at 2000 rpm, with the 2WD models producing slightly less at 106 kW (142 hp) at 4000 rpm and 356 N·m (263 lb·ft) at 2000 rpm. The high-powered V-6 a breath-taking 198 kW (266 hp) at 5600 rpm of power and 385 N·m (284 lb·ft) at 4000 rpm of torque. Both engines come with a standard 5 speed Automatic, with a 6 speed manual available for the Diesel. These models are not as luxurious as the UK versions and do not have leather, climate control or satellite navigation system. The 2008 model of the Navara was launched on July 2. Although the same truck underneath, the Navara now had a new style of alloy wheels, bluetooth as standard, side work lights and indicators on the wing mirrors. The 2008 Single Cab became available in Thailand since March 6. The 2.5 engine reduces the torque down from 356 N·m (263 ft·lbf) to 294 N·m (217 ft·lbf) @ 2,000 rpm. Using 15" wheels and exclusively reserved modified chassis. Power steering is standard, also available electric mirrors and central locking as optional extra. Nissan planned to sell the single cab and began to export worldwide at the same month. Nissan also continue to sell the D22 pickups with minor updates for a cheaper choice (now called as Frontier LCV). The Nissan Navara Double Cab became available in Malaysia on November 5, 2008. It is available with a 2.5L diesel engine producing 128 kW (172 hp) and 403 N·m (297 ft·lbf), only with a 5-speed automatic. A year later the 6-speed manual version is available. The D22 series Nissan Frontier remains on sale in Malaysia with a manual transmission.[10] In November 2008 Nissan Thailand Released the all new Nissan Navara Calibre a 4×2 pickup with the amplified styling of a muscular 4×4 with a 144 PS (106 kW) @4000 rpm 36.3 kg·m (356 N·m; 263 ft·lbf) @2000 rpm available with a 5 speed automatic an a 6 speed manual transmissions. [edit] Navara Facelift (European Models 2010) Nissan has released the complete details and images of the 2010 Nissan Navara facelift along with the 2011 Nissan Pathfinder facelift. The 2010 Nissan Navara facelift are now powered by a new 3.0-litre V6 turbo V9X Engine diesel engine producing 240 hp (175 kW),406 lb-ft (500 Nm) @ 2,500 rpm and a revised 2.5-litre dCi unit(YD25DDTi High Power). The 2011 Nissan Navara and Pathfinder facelift V6 develop 170 kW (231 PS) and 550 Nm of torque between 1,700 rpm and 2,500 rpm an the famous YD engine which produces 190 PS (140 kW) and 450 Nm of torque an the VQ40DE remains the same with the 265 hp @5600 rpm; 291 ft·lbf (395 N·m) @4000 rpm. There are subtle changes to the headlights and the bonnet. The v-shaped grille shell is less pronounced and the bumper is rounder and projects 80mm further forward, but it's the six-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels or optional 18-inch alloy wheels that will be the plainest tell-tale to the new vehicle's identity. Inside the new Navara (top of the line model), Nissan designers have specified softer materials of a better quality for the dash, seats and interior moulds. The centre console and fascia designs have been revised, as have the instrument binnacle layout and door trims. Additional bright/gloss finish surfacing is used throughout the cabin. The six-stack CD audio system or the TV Navigation entertainment console is upgraded with speed-sensing volume, MP3 compatibility and Bluetooth connectivity for the (six-stack CD audio system). Other new or revised features include dual-zone climate control, remote audio/Bluetooth/trip computer controls on the steering wheel, trip computer, external temperature gauge, speed-sensitive variable windscreen wipers and 'follow me home' lighting. The electric mirrors now fold in fully for car washes or parking in narrow spaces. Importantly, the upgraded Navara (diesel only) gains stability control—or Vehicle Dynamic Control to use Nissan's term for it—and all petrol V6 and diesel variants score side-impact and side-curtain airbags to complement the dual front airbags. Facelift for the South America, Asia/Oceania (except Australia), and the Caribbean models which is produced in Thailand will get it face lift later this year. [edit] International production facilities The Frontier is known as Nissan Navara in most of Europe and Australia and New Zealand, and Nissan Terrano in Chile (only D40 series is known as Navara). It is currently built in Smyrna, Tennessee, Spain, South Africa, Thailand, Philippines, China, Mexico, Brazil and Egypt. [edit] Safety The D40 Navara has undergone Euro NCAP crash testing along with the Mitsubishi Triton and Isuzu D-Max, and received one star with a strikeout; however, after retesting with upgraded computer software it went from the lowest in the group to the highest (overall) with 3 stars. Among the problems discovered during the test was delayed airbag deployment and insufficient seatbelt restraint, which were solved with the software upgrade. [edit] Awards and recognition 2010 Nissan Frontier Received NHTSA's Highest Side-impact Safety Rating(5 stars).[11] 2010 Nissan Frontier Received J.D. Power and Associates Highest Ranked Midsize Pickup In Initial Quality Award.[12] [edit] See also Nissan Hardbody Nissan Pathfinder Nissan Titan [edit] References ^ http://www.zznissan-oting.com.cn/ official Dongfeng Oting website ^ "Fiat. Although accepted by a wide range of ages, incomes, lifestyles and genders, Nissan marketed the Xterra primarily to the adventurous and outdoor consumer. Many commercials feature one driving the vehicle through mud, unloading mountain bikes out of the back, or packing up surfing equipment. The Xterra wasn't Nissan's first compact SUV. Nissan in Japan had the Nissan Mistral, in Europe the Terrano a 2-door SUV sold from 1993-2006. Three design cues have remained constant through the vehicle's life, its raised rear roofline and the hump-backed rear gate. The raised roof allows for stadium seating and the hump provides room for a first aid kit. The rear door handles are installed on the "C" pillar as a Nissan design tradition started with the 1986 Nissan Pathfinder. When the four door Pathfinder was introduced, Nissan chose to conceal the door handles as a part of the "C" pillar trim to visually make it appear like a two door truck with a camper shell, with conventional door handles on the front doors. Nissan Palladin In the United States, the Xterra was Nissan's entry-level SUV until the arrival of the 2008 Nissan Rogue. In the Nissan lineup, the Xterra is priced between the Rogue and the Murano, but sized below the Rogue. The Nissan Paladin is a SUV manufactured by Zhengzhou Nissan Automobile Co., Ltd. and is sold in China only. It is active in the Paris Dakar Rally during these years. The Paladin uses the same chassis and running gear as the first generation Nissan Xterra, but the engine is a 2.5 diesel mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The front end is from the local Pickup. The base XE came with a 143 hp (107 kW) KA24DE I4, 5-speed manual transmission, and steel wheels. It lacked such accessories as step rails and roof rack. The most popular XE Xterras were configured with several option packages combining the 170 horsepower 3.3L VG33E V6 with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission and such features as roof rack, side step-rails, and carpeted floormats. The XE proved to be the most popular of the trim levels, with more flexibility on equipment options. A fully loaded XE had almost all the practical features of the top-of-the-line SE model, while costing an average of $2,000 less. The SE was the premium trim level for the Xterra, offering almost everything available on an XE as standard. A flip-up sunroof and "SE" badging on the back set a fully-optioned XE and SE apart. Several minor options were available from the dealer, such as mudflaps, cargo liners, and in-cabin ventilation microfilters.[1] Canadian models from 2000-2004 were limited only to the VG33E V6, and only available with part-time 4WD. The interior however, had minor changes in the climate controls. The buttons and controls were livened up by leaving the old 200 sx layout with a more rugged look of the same set up from 2002-2004. [edit] 2002–2004 Xterra was freshened for 2002 with a redesigned dash and center console, improved powerplant, and front end styling. The 3.3L VG33E V6 was upgraded to 180 hp (134 kW) and a 210 hp (157 kW) supercharged VG33ER option was carried over from the 2001 Nissan Frontier, with 246 lb·ft (334 N·m) of torque for the automatic, and 231 lb·ft (313 N·m) of torque with 5-speed manual. This is either for the sake of the manual gearbox not being able to handle the additional torque[2], or to give the automatic more power to compensate for the longer gearing[3]. Canadian supercharged models had the option of both the 5-speed manual (with LSD) and 4-speed automatic through 2004, however the 5-speed manual was no longer offered after 2002 in the United States. The 2002 Xterra's restyled front end was grafted on to an otherwise unchanged bodywork. In 2003, new options were added including side-curtain airbags and a tire pressure monitoring system. Audio systems were also upgraded, the premium 6-disc, 4-speaker AM/FM/CD setup being replaced by a 6-speaker 300W Rockford Fosgate AM/FM/CD system along with an 8-inch subwoofer that took up a small portion of the rear storage area. The Nissan Xterra SE & XE system is designed to Rockford Fosgate's sonic signature "The Punch"; a two DIN AM/FM/RDS/6-disc source unit/in-dash CD changer (frequency response (CD) +\- 3dB, 20Hz-20 kHz); an amplifier that drives 1-ohm loads per channel and 72 watts (12V Batt) per channel with built-in equalization, custom tailored to the vehicle; the lower front door speaker uses a 6.5" 1 ohm driver and a special 1 ohm voice coil; the upper front door speaker uses a 4-ohm, 25mm tweeter; the rear speaker systems are 2-ohm 6" x 9" full-range speakers located in the rearmost side panels.[4] The system was advertised as an 8-speaker by considering the dual voice coil subwoofer as two speakers. The Rockford-Fosgate system's speakers, amplifier and factory subwoofer enclosure are actually manufacturerd by Clarion. Offering a rear differential locker on the off-road model, the new model is larger in all dimensions than its predecessor. Utilizing Nissan's more refined, variable valve timing fitted 4.0 L VQ40DE engine, it produces 265 hp (198 kW). The Xterra received a facelift for 2009 with more options and colors, leather seats on SE models, and roof mounted lights on off-road models. As a result, 2008 was the last year of the Nissan Xterra in Mexico, as the larger-but-cheaper unibody Nissan Rogue replaced the Xterra in the lineup. Reasons why the Xterra stopped sales in Mexico was for Nissan to free up room for the 2009 Suzuki Equator at the Smyrna plant, and also because of Nissan building fewer Xterras due to declining sales in the United States and Canada. After that, the Xterra is now mutually exclusive with the unibody X-Trail sold outside the United States and Canada. However, the X-Trail was sold in Canada from 2005-06 alongside the Xterra, but after the 2006 model year, Nissan replaced the X-Trail in Canada with the larger Rogue. 2009-present Nissan Xterra [edit] Awards and recognition 2000 Motor Trend's Sport Utility of the Year 2000 North American Truck of the Year 2000 New England Motor Press Association's Winter Vehicle Award of New England for Best in Class - Mini Sport Utility 2001 Named Top Car by AAA New Car and Truck Buying Guide 2005 Named on the Automobile Magazine's 50 Great New Cars list 2006 Nominated as North American Truck of the Year 2006 Motor Trend's Sport Utility of the Year 2006 Motor Trend's Truck Trend's Best Little-Guy SUV Award 2006 Car and Driver Rock-Hopper SUV Winner.[5] 2006 4x4 of the Year award from Peterson's 4-Wheel and Off-Road magazine. 2006 Edmunds.com Editor's Most Wanted Vehicle 2009 4Wheeler Magazine's SUV of the Year 2010 Xterra Received NHTSA's Highest Side-impact Safety Rating(five stars). Nissan became the first automaker to sell a compact pickup truck in the U.S in 1959 under the Datsun name. Nearly 40 years later the 1998 Frontier was Nissan’s first pickup redesign in ten years and the first Nissan pickup to have a name. Nissan added the 4-door Frontier Crew Cab in 2000. The Frontier was redesigned with bold exterior styling for 2001 and an available supercharged engine.
