The two groups also announced an equity exchange that will give the Renault-Nissan Alliance a 3.1% stake in Daimler and Daimler a 3.1% stake in Renault and a 3.1% stake in Nissan.
Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche says that the Stuttgart automaker will become the leading manufacturer for electric-car batteries – the only problem is, the company’s new business partner CEO Carlos Ghosn has the same idea.
Both have promised to produce the best battery power pack as they kick off plans to jointly produce electric-cars.
“Daimler has been a company that has traditionally been reluctant to give up its own technology path,” said Anil Valsan, the London-based director of automotive research at Frost & Sullivan. “While Daimler”s battery may have a technical edge, Renault-Nissan”s solution may end up being more cost competitive.”

cars ahead of their launch next year By Lem Bingley 04 Aug 2010 Verdict Renault and Nissan have made different choices to bring full-size electric
cars to market in 2011. Both are good cars for urban or suburban use but the
Leaf is ultimately a more integrated and enticing product. If the Fluence ZE
were a BlackBerry smartphone, the Leaf would be an iPhone. Price: TBC Manufacturer: Renault and Nissan Rating: REVIEW < Continued from page 1 2 The UK government last week made a rare exception to its spending review
process, otherwise scheduled to conclude in October, by
confirming
grants for the purchase of electric cars would go ahead. The grants contribute 25 per cent towards the purchase of battery electric
cars or plug-in hybrids, up to a maximum of £5,000 per car. In total £43m has
been allocated – sufficient for an initial 8,600 cars – starting in January 2011
and running until the end of March 2012, with a review slated for January 2012. The coalition's plan is a sizable step back from the £230m funding announced
by the Labour government in February, but is nonetheless a major leap forward in
making electric cars more affordable in the short term. Those vehicles eligible for the revised scheme are yet to be confirmed, but
the original scheme was set to exclude slow and fragile electric runabouts such
as the Reva G-Wiz, which are legally classed as four-wheeled motorcycles rather
than fully fledged cars. The criteria laid out by Labour were: • Pure battery-electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen fuel cell power source
• Zero emissions in use, or less than 75g/km for plug-in hybrids
• At least 70 miles range for battery cars, or 10 miles on battery alone for
plug-in cars
• At least 60mph top speed
• At least three years or 75,000 miles of vehicle warranty
• At least three years warranty on the battery, with five years available on
demand (presumably at additional cost)
• Reasonable battery life after three years ("reasonable" to be defined)
• Crash-tested to European, US, Japanese or an equivalent standard for cars • Compliance with electrical safety standards both when in use and when
recharging The grant will be available to both business and private buyers, while
business buyers will also benefit from other financial incentives, such as
zero-rated benefit-in-kind tax, plus the facility to set 100 per cent of
purchase cost against corporation tax in year one. A number of manufacturers are preparing to bring cars to market that will
qualify for the grant, including Vauxhall, Ford, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Renault and
Nissan. In the last month, BusinessGreen.com has been able to take a close
look at two of the contenders: Renault's Fluence ZE and Nissan's Leaf, both of
which are pure battery-electric cars capable of carrying five adults and
travelling up to 100 miles on a single charge. Both cars are "C-segment" vehicles, of roughly the same proportions as a Ford
Focus or VW Golf. However, the Nissan Leaf is a five-door hatchback – the most
popular format for cars of this size in Europe – while the Renault Fluence ZE is
a booted saloon. The
Leaf is largely a clean-sheet design, built as an electric car from the outset,
while the Fluence ZE is a modified version of a conventional model. The two cars look very different but they share some similarities under the
skin. Their two makers are partners in the
Renault-Nissan
Alliance, a wide-ranging collaboration established in 1999, so engineers
pooled their efforts on some control systems, for example. Lithium-ion battery
cells for both cars will initially be made in the same Japanese factory, with
production from a new UK factory due to supply both manufacturers from 2013. That's not to say that the cars are identical under the bonnet. The Leaf has
a higher-powered motor at 107bhp to the Fluence’s 95bhp, for example, and a
slightly higher top speed. The Leaf is electronically limited to 90mph, whereas
the Fluence ZE is capped at 135km/h (about 83mph). A
more significant difference is that Renault plans to support battery replacement
during longer journeys. The plan is to build automated "swap stations" to unplug a depleted battery
and replace it with a fully charged unit in just three minutes. The Leaf's battery, by contrast, is designed to stay put. To continue a long
journey, Leaf owners will need to hook up to a standard mains supply for up to
eight hours, or to a high-voltage fast charger for 20 to 30 minutes. In the near term, in the absence of swap stations (there is currently one
prototype station in France and another in Israel), Fluence ZE drivers will
similarly need to hunt down a standard or fast-charge socket to go beyond 100
miles. In practice, both vehicles will likely be used for relatively short journeys,
returning to their home base for slow charging at the end of each day. Nissan's
research suggests that only a minority of European car owners regularly travel
more than 150km (93 miles) in a day. This view is supported by
real-world
trials carried out by rival makers, such as Mitsubishi. In the UK alone there are about six million households that run more than
one car, often with the smallest car relegated to wholly urban or suburban
duties. Electric cars can slot into this substantial niche with ease. Both cars carry the same number of lithium-ion cells and store an identical
24kWh of energy, although the layout of the cells differs. Because of the plan
for swap-station removal, the Fluence's battery has been made as compact as
possible. It is basically a big square lump bolted behind the rear seats,
stretching from floor to parcel shelf and filling almost all of the space that
might normally provide the boot. As a result, the standard Fluence bodyshell has
been stretched by 13cm to provide reasonable boot capacity behind the battery.
Even after this rump surgery, the Fluence ZE's boot remains tight at just 300l,
and there is no option to slot large items through from the boot into the
passenger compartment. The motor, control electronics, battery charger and
cooling system, meanwhile, all live under the bonnet. The Leaf's battery, by contrast, is made up of cells spread out across the
car's floor area. The charger is positioned behind the rear seats, leaving
little of real bulk under the low, sloping nose. Fortunately the charger is
relatively compact, allowing long loads to be carried over the folded rear seat
backs. In practicality, then, the Leaf beats the Fluence. The low, spread-out
position of the 250kg battery should also give the Leaf the edge in agility and
passive safety. We've driven pre-production examples of the two cars, and both felt solid,
composed and easy to drive – the Fluence's chassis engineers have done a fine
job of disguising the large weight over the rear wheels. Both cars offer more
than enough speed and acceleration to tackle busy urban roads as well as the odd
bout of dual carriageway driving. Range will plummet dramatically at sustained high speed, due to the amount of
energy that must be spent overcoming wind resistance, so while both are capable
of motorway speeds, we estimate that neither battery will last for more than
about 50 miles at 70mph. « Previous Continued on page 2 > Print Send Save Share Digg Tweet More on: Electric VehiclesRenaultNissan TechnologyProcurementTransportAutomotive READERS COMMENTS Add your comment display:none ADD YOUR COMMENT Your name Your email address We won't publish your address Your comment title Your comment: By submitting a comment you agree to abide by our Terms & Conditions Submit your comment RELATED CONTENT Honda's FCX Clarity offers glimpse of a cleaner future Zac Goldsmith: The most important politician of his generation? The high point of the day was the women stepping up the game with a great level of riding, taking the same big cliff jumps as the men and creative line choices. Local Squaw Valley skier and Freeride World Tour wild card Jaclyn Paaso was without a doubt the biggest crowd pleaser. She took a massive cliff jump at the bottom of the face, faster and higher than most of the men, challenging them for the second heat.Three out of the four winners today (Windstedt, de Le Rue, Paaso) have scored enough points to climb to the top of the overall Freeride World Tour Ranking 2010, before the final stage Nissan Xtreme by Swatch in Verbier, March 20.Men Ski 1- Henrik Windstedt (SWE) 2- Aurélien Ducroz (FRA) 3- Reine Barkered (SWE)Women Ski 1- Jaclyn Paaso (USA) 2- Ane Enderud (NOR) 3- Ingrid Backstrom (USA)Men Snowboard 1- Xavier de Le Rue (FRA) 2- Matt Annetts (USA) 3- Ryland Bell (USA)Women Snowboard 1- Shannan Yates (USA) 2- Aline Bock (GER) 3- Susan Mol (USA)(Click here for Complete Results)Organizer Nicolas Hale-Woods (SUI) on the Competition Format Nissan Tram Face: best score outt of two runs“The majority of the athletes were really happy with the two-run format. It was a great opportunity for the sport to allow faster progression as the riders would attempt more tricks and push their limits more than if they only would have had one chance. And the good news is that no one would do anything dangerous above his or her abilities. We saw some amazing riding today.”Nissan Tram Face 2010 Action Highlights:Head judge for skiing,Eric Seymour (USA) on Henrik Windstedt’s winning second run:“Henrik showed the most progressive run of the day, throwing a giant backflip off the start straight into a big 360° (full rotation). He skied very fast and smooth all the way to his final air – a 45 footer (15 metres), which he landed perfectly. He managed to mix both new school freestyle and big mountain skiing.”Henrik’s winning run:Related posts:Freeride World Tour, Squaw Valley resultsThe 2nd Stop of the World Freeride Tour in Squaw Valley has left the leader...Freeride World Tour: Riders confirmed! By the third tour stage, the leading candidates for the Freeride World Champion title will be looking to make a major impression on the infamous Tram Face in Squaw Valley USA, a face that has never officially been ridden before.
Strictly illegal to ski, the Tram Face is being opened specifically for the Freeride World Tour competition. Its steep and seemingly un-skiable pitch, permanent closure, and tantalizing location in perfect view from Squaw Valley’s Village and base area, have made it a coveted descent among the strong local freeride community. Several of the top American riders are from Squaw Valley (Jeremy Jones, J.T. Holmes, Tim Dutton, Cody Townsend, Elyse Saugstad, Will Brommelsiek) and will clearly be aiming for victory on home snow and score important points on the FWT ranking.
Conditions are great this year with the El Nino weather pattern bringing huge amount of snow to the Californian resort, and history will be made when the world’s best freeriders will get the chance to challenge the steep rock face.
Rider Quotes
JT Holmes (USA) – local Squaw Valley rider – 10th on the Freeride World Tour Ranking Men Ski:
“I am looking forward to see the first descents that are going to be skied on Tram Face. The event has a potential to be the ultimate show for the public! We consider Tram Face the forbidden fruit and it will be nice to get a taste of it!”
Julien Lopez (FRA) – winner of the Nissan Russian Adventure by Swatch and second on the Freeride World Tour Ranking Men Ski
“As I already have skied in Squaw Valley I have of course noticed the Tram Face. It is a really mythical face! It will without doubts be a great event as the face never has been ridden and it will be a first for all of us. Although I am currently second on the ranking any scenario is possible for the final podium.”
Aline Bock (GER) – Leading the Freeride World Tour Ranking Women Snowboard:
“I feel very honoured to snowboard down a face that is normally illegal to ride and closed for skiers and snowboarders. The Tram Face looks playful with steep sections, nice jumps and many technical lines. I think the riders will provide a great show. Leading the FWT Ranking gives me a lot of confidence and I am still super happy about my win in Fieberbunn, but I also know, that it can change very quickly, so I just focus on the next event, trying to do my best and having lots of fun.”

The changes include a honeycomb grille and clear lenses for the front indicator lights. The 1.0-litre petrol engine will no longer be offered. Instead, buyers will be able to choose from the existing engines – 1.2 and 1.4 petrol units or 1.5 turbodiesel – or opt for a new 1.6-litre petrol. The 110bhp 1.6-litre engine powers the Micra 160SR. The sporty new model gets stiffer suspension, sharper steering and a chunky bodykit with modified front bumpers and inset foglamps. The new Sport-badged models will share this look to help distinguish them from the E, S, SE and SVE versions.Inside, Nissan has worked to improve the quality of the cabin finish with numerous tweaks, such as chrome-ringed dials and upgraded materials. There is also a choice of two contrasting colour combinations, as well the option of an all-black interior. Better door seals and thicker door glass should improve noise insulation, while for the first time there will be the option of a six-CD changer in the dash. The range now starts at £8075 for the three-door 1.2-litre Micra E. Prices for S and SE are £280 more than before (starting at £8630 and £9630 respectively), while the increased-spec SVE models will cost £680 more at £11,175. The new Sport trim replaces current SX models, and is now £415 cheaper, although it no longer has air-conditioning as standard. The sporty 160SR costs £9995 as a three-door or £10,645 as a five-door.Visit Whatcar.com on 27 June to find out the verdict on the new Micra 160SR.
