the new energy
2. How to charge up
Every car needs to be refuelled. But how about a new way of doing it? How about doing it from home? Well, that’s just what you can do. For a long charge, the all-electric Nissan LEAF can be fully recharged overnight on 220V – 16A just by plugging it into the mains (should take about eight hours). You can do this from the office during the day, too. Your car will even send a message to your phone when it’s charged. Or if you’re out and about and need a quick charge, you can just plug Nissan LEAF into one of the handy top-up quick charging network points for an 80% charge in less than 30 minutes. You can also find where these points are on Nissan LEAF’s navigation system and check your charge progress on your mobile. Thanks to our partnerships with organisations all over the world there are already many charging points in cities everywhere. And there are going to be a lot more in the near future to make life even easier. Shop while your car refuels? We like the sound of that. 2.1 - Trips and DurationNissan LEAF isn’t just for popping to the shops and back (although it’s perfectly happy doing that). It can be used for longer journeys too. To help you get to wherever you want to go, there are three ways of charging your Nissan LEAF. 1) From home or the office just by plugging into the standard 220V – 16A socket. 2) From home or office and then from any one of the many charging top-up points. 3) A quick charge from these charge points where you can restore 80% of the battery power in less than 30 minutes. So you keep going wherever you’re going. Simple. 2.2 - Charging stationsThanks to Nissan’s partnerships with local governments and civic organisations there are hundreds of both regular and quick charging stations already in place (click here to see location maps). In fact, we have already signed 26 partnerships all over Europe and there will be much more. So local, state and federal governments can provide the infrastructure support, public awareness and all the info you need to drive your Nissan LEAF wherever you want to. We’re also working to ensure existing utilities can support EV infrastructure. Also, by holding discussions with companies specializing in charging infrastructures and IT systems, we can work to ensure the construction of a full, seamless set up to welcome EV in our streets. Ensure tax incentives and driving charge reductions are in place. And work harder with our technical partners so we always push EV research and development further. Making Nissan LEAF is just the beginning. The journey will go on forever. 3. The power
Here’s some new thinking. How about enjoying all the performance, all the handling and all the power you’d expect in a four door car - yet produce none of the emissions? The laminated lithium-ion batteries give Nissan LEAF immediate torque response. Which means instant power from a standing start. And as these batteries are incredibly efficient, Nissan LEAF will take you to around 90mph. Plus, you can take five people in completely smooth comfort. In other words, you get the same out of it as you would from a standard car. Except the CO 2 emissions. See how the LEAF feels to drive
Find out more about the electric engine technology 4. The range
We’ve taken the new, cutting-edge technology of Nissan LEAF a long way. Now it’s your turn. With just one full charge, you can drive Nissan LEAF around 100 miles. OK, it’s not once round the earth. But it’s further than 80% of us drive on average every day. You can top up the battery to 80% of its power in less than 30 minutes from any one of the charging points – the smart navigation system on Nissan LEAF will even calculate the quickest route to them. Regenerative technology harnesses braking power, and feeds this energy back into the battery. Cool aerodynamic styling helps give even more range autonomy. But of course, there is a price to pay for all this. And roughly speaking, it’s about a quarter. Driving one hundred miles in a conventional car costs around €8. In Nissan LEAF, it’s about €2. Plus, there’s less cost to the environment. And we can all afford to do that. 5. The recyclability
Here at Nissan we believe that what goes around, comes around. That’s why we have made sure not only that Nissan LEAF and the batteries are more than 95% recyclable when they reach the end of their lifespan but Nissan LEAF is 20% made from recycled materials (like used mineral water bottles or end-of-life bumpers). That’s because laminated lithium-ion batteries in Nissan LEAF will still be operating at 80% efficiency after five years. So why get rid of them? Why not remove, renew and then use them somewhere else? For example, in energy stations and fork lift trucks and other electric vehicles. So that’s what we’ve made sure will happen, and that it’s as easy to do as possible. Energy is saved when Nissan LEAF is made, saved when it’s used and even saved when it’s recycled.
And that’s a new idea we can all come round to. 6. The new owner’s budget
Nissan LEAF is designed to save you more than CO 2 emissions. It will retail at about the same price as a comparable compact family car. It will save you money on every journey as Nissan LEAF costs around €1 per 100km to drive. And you can charge it up from home (even select the time of day when the electricity is cheaper). As for ongoing cost of owning Nissan LEAF, we are working to ensure this is will be lower than that of owning an equivalent traditional vehicle. We want to ensure governmental incentives, constantly improving battery technology/efficiency and greater production levels to bring costs down still further. In addition, maintenance costs on Nissan LEAF are reduced as there is no need for standard servicing (such as engine oil changes, transmission repairs, air filters, spark plugs...). In fact, just bring it in to us to service and our specialists will sort everything out for you. So you spend less on running it and maintaining it. And of course, you save a little bit more of the environment on every drive, too. 1. The technology
The new car needed a new way to power it. But how to do it? We liked the idea of batteries. They can be portable. Rechargeable. Efficient and light. But were they powerful enough for a car... So we spent a lot of time and money taking basic battery technology and scaling it up. The result was laminated lithium-ion batteries. These give Nissan LEAF twice the capacity and 1.5 times the power of conventional lithium-ion batteries. Which means Nissan LEAF can reach 90mph and drive for 100 miles on one charge. And it can take five people in comfort and zip off from the lights faster than you expect. Yet Nissan LEAF emits zero emissions whilst driving and zero engine noise. And generates power back to the battery every time you brake. They're made from recycled material and they're more than 95% recyclable, too. And we can't keep quiet about that. 1.1 Leading the world in battery technologyNearly 20 years and over €80,000,000. You could do a lot with that. In fact, that’s just what we did. Nissan invested in developing and producing a new battery that was lighter, more powerful, more efficient and faster to recharge than anything that had gone before it. Now factories in the UK and Portugal will produce these laminated lithium-ion batteries to power Nissan LEAF. The world’s most advanced batteries for the world’s first no-compromise all-electric vehicle. 1.2 The battery technologyIn the past, what stopped the Electric Car (EV) being practical was the battery. Perhaps the biggest advance in EV technology has been the development of the Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery – and has at last enabled the production of a practical all-electric car. But we didn’t stop there. Nissan has developed the technology further by producing the new laminated Li-ion battery. Twice the capacity and 1.5 times the power of a conventional Li-ion battery, laminated Li-ion batteries can dramatically extend the range and performance of an EV. Plus its flat shape and compact size takes up less space in the car. So there’s more space for you.Nissan LEAF is ready to go. Are you? 1.3 Nissan LEAF breakthroughThe battery technology in Nissan LEAF had to do more than power the car. It had to be reliable. It had to be durable. It had to be simple enough to be mass produced. And the battery needed to be recyclable when it reached the end of its life. On top of that, during development we also doubled the energy and its power output (compared to conventional Li-ion batteries). We laminated it to keep it cool so it’s suitable for automotive use. We even made it smaller. Powerful stuff. 1.4 Safety and ReliabilityWhen it came to testing, we left nothing out. Even though no fuel means no fuel risk, we had to test further. So to ensure Nissan LEAF was just as safe as a standard compact family car in every other aspect, it was crash tested, assessed and evaluated just like a standard car. Thanks to the triple layered protection system protecting the battery, the triple electric safety system - including automatic power cut-off - and the six air bags, ABS, EBD, VDC and optimized crumple zones, it passed every test. When it comes to reliability, Nissan LEAF has less moving parts than a standard car, so there is less to go wrong. Which means fewer trips to the workshop. The battery itself has been tested beyond breaking point to ensure years of smooth, quiet, hassle-free driving. Did we test everything we could on this all-electric breakthrough vehicle? Of course. No emissions, no omissions. || EVERYMAN DRIVING EXPERIENCES: Gift Experience Vouchers, Birthday Presents, Driving Experience in cars such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Audi R8, Nissan GTR + Lots More BACK TO EVERYMAN DRIVING EXPERIENCES, A RANGE OF DRIVING EXPERIENCES TO SUIT EVERYONE SUPER CAR DRIVING EXPERIENCES: Drive Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Nissan GTR, Audi R8, Porsche and lots more super cars FERRARI DRIVING ASTON MARTIN DRIVING AUDI DRIVING LAMBORGHINI DRIVING PORSCHE DRIVING NISSAN GTR DRIVING SUBARU DRIVING RACE CAR DRIVING EXPERIENCES: Drive single seaters and GT cars as well as a Caterham Supersport 7 and Van Diemen single seater. FS apps Ltd, based at the North East Business and Innovation Centre (BIC), has developed two iPhone applications exclusively for Nissan, following their successful delivery of past products for the global motor giant. The first of these applications, ‘Find my Van’, is designed specifically for drivers who may be in unfamiliar territory, storing the location of where they park their vehicle and allowing them to navigate back by foot. It also allows users to email the GPS location of a vehicle to allow someone else with a key to collect it. Clare Head, director of FS Apps, said: “We believe this is the start of a smartphone revolution in the automotive world and we’ll be seeking to build and develop more and more useful apps for the industry.” FS apps was established in 2010 to provide and manage smartphone application development on behalf of the world automotive industry. Directors Clare Head and Shaun Macintosh, who are also the founding partners of sister company FS design, are aiming to provide a ‘one stop shop’ for all automotive manufactures, offering solutions across all smartphone platforms including Android and Windows Mobile, as well as iPhone. FS APPS DIRECTORS SHAUN MACINTOSH AND CLARE HEAD Andy Palmer, Senior Vice President at Nissan Motor Co. Ltd, said: "Through our partnership with FS, Nissan continues to improve our commercial customer's experience by offering the latest user-friendly technology. By integrating with smartphones, we will be able to offer new and advancing applications over the life of the vehicle, ensuring our products keep up with the speed of business today." The second application that FS has devised for Nissan is an ‘e-owners manual’, which exploits the full potential of smartphone capabilities by giving the user access to videos depicting the key features of the vehicle. It also contains the complete owner’s manual, for reference wherever a driver may be. Clare Head said: “This app is the first vehicle owner’s manual to be launched globally by any automotive vehicle manufacturer and we aim to be the world leader in this field. Our vision is that by 2014 the traditional printed owner’s manual will be a thing of the past, enhancing this new technology to deliver a better customer experience, whilst reducing C02 emissions with elimination of paper usage.” Bob Laishley, Assistant Chief Vehicle Engineer at Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NCT-E) commented: "This is a unique proposition and has been a very cost effective way to deliver our first electronic owners manual. FS have produced a quality app and are leading us forward through the use and potential of this emerging technology." http://www.fsapps.co.uk/ Add your own comment: Name: Comment: Your comment may not appear instantly until it has been approved back to previous page Subscribe to BIC news To subscribe to BIC news updates Click here >> Can't find what you're looking for?
