The HR12DE is the first of many similar engines from various automakers expected to debut in the next several years. This is a 1.2-liter inline-three with direct injection and a supercharger. The engine runs on the Miller cycle, a variant of the Atkinson cycle used on hybrid vehicles. Miller cycle engines close the intake valve late (after bottom dead center on the intake stroke) which gives an effective power stroke that is longer than the compression stroke. This cycle is more efficient but produces less torque, a deficiency that is alleviated by the supercharger. The new triple is equipped with automatic start-stop and internal friction is reduced by 30 percent through special coatings on the piston rings and a variable displacement oil pump. Nissan claims the new engine will have power similar to a 1.5-liter inline-four (100-105 horsepower) with CO2 emissions of about 95 grams / kilometer on the EU drive cycle. [Source: Nissan] PRESS RELEASE Nissan Announces a New 3-Cylinder 1.2L DIG Supercharger Engine - Aims for Lowest level of Fuel Consumption in the World with a Power Output Equivalent to that of a 1.5L Engine - YOKOHAMA (July 16, 2010)-Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced its newly developed HR12DDR, a 1.2 liter engine, aiming to achieve the lowest level of fuel consumption in the world for gasoline-powered cars, with an engine power output equivalent to that of a 1.5L engine(s) and CO2 emission of 95 grams per kilometer (New European Drive Cycle). The engine will be mounted on the new "Micra (also known as March in other markets)" in the European market in the first half of 2011. The engine is based on the HR12DE, the 1.2L 3-cylinder engine mounted on the new Nissan MARCH. High engine performance and low fuel consumption levels have been achieved through the adoption of the Miller cycle, gasoline direct injection system (DIG), and a highly efficient supercharger, in combination with an Idling Stop system. Here are details of the technologies: By adopting the Miller cycle, in which the power stroke is enhanced by the compression stroke as a result of delaying the closing timing of the intake valve, the thermal energy of the fuel is converted to kinetic energy much more efficiently than it is with regular 4-stroke cycle engines, and pumping loss caused by intake manifold negative pressure has been reduced. Moreover, the highly compressed and high-temperature air-fuel mixture is cooled by the latent heat of the vaporization of fuel directly injected into the cylinder, and the temperature of the combustion chamber is lowered by adopting a piston-cooling channel and sodium-filled valves to control detonation. These technologies have enabled a compression ratio of 13*1 for improved combustion efficiency. The supercharger*2 is equipped with an automatic on/off clutch, which means that both high fuel efficiency and high engine performance can be achieved by automatically switching off supercharging while driving at low speeds, such as on city roads. Moreover, adoption of a hydrogen-free diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating for the piston rings and a variable displacement oil pump helps to reduce friction by up to 30%, compared with conventional 4-cylinder engines with similar performance levels. These technologies are the culmination of the company's research and development efforts based on the Nissan Green Program 2010 (NGP 2010) - Nissan's mid-term environmental action plan that includes initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions and introduce truly effective technologies, products and services into the market. 1. *1 Volume ratio of top dead center (TDC) and bottom dead center (BDC). With a higher ratio, higher efficiency (i.e. high performance) can be expected, although it becomes prone to detonation, such as engine knocking. In the case of gasoline-powered engines, the compression ratio is around 10, even for high-performance engines. 2. *2 A system in which a pump engine powered by the output shaft forcibly sends compressed air to the cylinder to gain a similar effect to that of engine displacement. A twin screw is a positive displacement compressor, whereas the roots is a positive displacement pump. The roots only pumps air, but the twin screw pumps and compresses. At load, the twin screw has much higher efficiency, but at low load, or even coasting, it will compress the air at the same ratio as in high load. The airflow has to be more greatly restricted upstream at throttle body to compensate. This causes the engine to be very inefficient at low load. We do know, however, that this engine has start-stop and a clutch that disengages the supercharger. I assume that they also have a a bypass duct and 3 way valve on the inake manifold. The ability to turn the supercharger off and go to natural aspiration is complex, expensive and very valuable if using a twin screw supercharger, but of only little value if they were using a roots. Therefore, they would not likely have a clutch on the spuercharger if it were a roots. ↓↑report3why not the LS2LS7? 11:27AM (7/19/2010)The Miller cycle makes less power, not just less torque.Reply ↓↑report4lne937s 12:24PM (7/19/2010)You should change to "Atkinson cycle" makes less power and torque. A Miller cycle engine by definition has forced induction- and typically makes more power. Compare the 210 hp 2.3l Miller cycle Mazda Millenia to the 170hp 2.5l Otto cycle. Despite smaller displacement and higher output, the Miller cycle engine still made better gas mileage. ↓↑report5Doug Danzeisen 11:35AM (7/19/2010)Using the Atkinson cycle with reduced displacement and fraction reduction strategies is logical and clever. Can we please see something like this here in the US>? I love the Volt, but realistically I will probably have an ICE vehicle as my primary transport for quite a few years yet. Bring it, we will come.Reply ↓↑report6lne937s 12:26PM (7/19/2010)"first of many similar engines from various automakers"Who else has a Miller cycle engine planned? I know Mazda experimented with it way back when, but ultimately abandoned it. How is it better than an otto cycle with a supercharger attached? anyone know?30% reduction in friction is pretty intense too.Hoping to see this bad boy in the Sentra/Versa. But Nissan usually does keep it's high tech engines in Japan..Reply ↓↑report9lne937s 4:26PM (7/19/2010)" i wonder what the fuel economy is like" There is a direct relationship between CO2 emissions and fuel mileage for a given fuel. 95g/km is using a gasoline motor is roughly equivalent to ~4.1 l/100 km or ~57 mpg (~same a Fiat 500 with 84hp twin air). So it is pretty good for a non-hybrid with a 100 hp+ gasoline motor. ↓↑report10Middle Way 4:48PM (7/19/2010)Are you sure? irregardless of emissions equipment and motor type?If it's a 50mpg motor, and they brought it here for around $15k... i think i'd be at the dealership gawkin' at it.. O_O ↓↑report11lne937s 5:17PM (7/19/2010)"Are you sure? irregardless of emissions equipment and motor type?"If it is using the same fuel, it makes no difference. CO2 and water are the ideal end products of hydrocarbon combustion. All improved emissions equiptment will does is lower the byproducts from incomplete combustion (that are fractions of a gram per km in modern internal combustion engines)- but that is not enough to make a significant change to the calculations. Basically, miles per gallon is measuring the distance traveled per unit of consumption of a fuel made up of carbon and hydrogen. If you burn that fuel, it will make water vapor and CO2. So the CO2 emissions are directly related to the amount of carbon being burned. In other words, the more of a carbon-based fuel you burn, the more CO2 you generate. Do some conversions (g/km CO2, l/100km, mpg) and you can figure out one from the other for a given fuel for a given test cycle (not all test cycles are the same, so you can't directly calculate EPA mpg estimates from EU cycle co2 emissions, but you can figure EU cycle fuel consumption). The only variable that makes a difference is if the fuel contains more or less carbon per gallon (diesel is more carbon dense, for example). Like the press release said, this is the best fuel efficiency for a motor in its performance class. The only way to beat currently it is to go hybrid, use a different fuel or have less power. Now, it may not rate 57 mpg in US fuel economy standards (as opposed the the EU cycle tested), but it would still be pretty good. ↓↑report12mentz 5:00PM (7/19/2010)"Miller cycle engines close the intake valve late (after bottom dead center on the intake stroke) which gives an effective power stroke that is longer than the compression stroke." This is exactly the same as so-called Atkinson cycle as it is implemented in eg the Prius. Historically Atkinson cycle was mechanically implemented via a complicated rod and crankshaft arrangement, rarely done anymore, if at all. (I'm not aware of any current examples.) "Miller cycle" is the term used when this approach is used along with a supercharger, as the article goes on to say. The lack of a supercharger is probably why Toyota and others use the term "Atkinson", since they use an electric motor's high torque to compensate for the engine's low power/torque, instead of the supercharger. Miller was the guy who had the idea of getting the benefit of Atkinson's approach, but by using valve timing instead of mechanical linkage, plus adding a supercharger. The advantage of the miller/atkinson cycle is significantly greater efficiency, since the expansion stroke is longer than the compression stroke, allowing the force of combustion to be more completely utilized. The disadvantage is low power, esp at low RPMs. I suspect that even with a supercharger the Otto cycle isn't as efficient because it doesn't utilize the force of each power stroke as completely, despite improved combustion from the supercharger, which the Miller cycle is also getting.Reply ↓↑report13digitalzombie 5:22PM (7/19/2010)Sweet! Report this review I searched high and low for the perfect 4x4 for me, something that was economical, not too big, but could pull a small horse trailer and cope with my very bumpy track and muddy fields. All was well until yesterday morning when I got in the car to find the oil light on. I immediately filled up and the light went off. However, the engine seemed very restricted, with no pull or drive up hills and through the changes of the gears. I got a neighbour to look at it last night (mechanic and car salesman) and he thinks its a blocked cat, not sure whats caused it but it doesn't look good. We seem to think that possibly the same issue had happened with the old owner but as he was also a mechanic, possibly he had cleared it out and thats why it had run so well until now. So its going in for diagnostics on Monday, and we will go from there, it will probably end up at auction and I will be back to driving my dads R reg 306 until I can save up enough money to buy another 4x4. I'm very disappointed, apart from this it is a lovely car. Read Guest's full review and ratings (205 words) Guest 1st Nov 2010 Reviewer rating: Guest's review has yet to be rated - Be the first! Firstly, this is not the kind of thing a lifestyle off-roader is meant to be good at; and secondly, if the desperately out-of-date Terrano II was anything to go by, a Nissan lifestyle off-roader in particular ought to be avoided if at all possible. Still, you have to play the hand you're dealt. The need to travel to a far-off metropolis arose at the same time as I was living with the X-Trail. End of story. And do you know, I could hardly have picked a better travelling companion myself. Its name suggests a vehicle which can stride boldly across ground previously visited only by the occasional llama, but this is not what the car is all about. Although it feels like it would make a reasonable job of rough-terrain driving, the X-Trail's design brief was biased towards performance on tarmac. This is almost universally the case these days, since off-roaders famously spend almost none of their time off-road. Still, it's a difficult compromise to make, and Nissan has done it expertly. The test car, in top-of-the-range SE+ specification, used the 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine and the long-striding six-speed manual gearbox. Along with supportive seats and a roomy interior, these allow for hours of quiet, relaxed, comfortable motorway cruising. Far more so, in fact, than you would expect from a car fitted with this particular engine, which apart from a radical and obviously extremely effective rethink of the fuel system is exactly the same as the one which made such an appalling racket in the Almera hatchback we tested some time ago. Real-World Performer It's by no means the strongest engine of its type on the market, and on paper the performance isn't all that impressive. But 0-62mph figures, for example, can be quite irrelevant to the way a car behaves in the real world, and in-gear acceleration is certainly strong. There's also enough torque to pull that high sixth gear without any trouble, and also to let you overtake easily and safely. The suspension has been very well thought out, too. Barring an occasional uncertainty in cross winds (an almost unavoidable consequence of the car's height), the X-Trail was very stable in a straight line. In quite different driving conditions, it also proved capable of being hustled enthusiastically along more challenging roads, thanks to a combination of softness and good damping which is shared by most of the cars I particularly enjoy driving. This is the time to mention the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP+) which links the 4x4 system, ABS, traction control and active brake limited slip differential to sort things out in tricky situations. Nissan makes quite a big deal of this, and understandably so, but the handling is so good that I'm sure tricky situations are unlikely to arise very often, unless the driver does something particularly stupid. There's room for a lot of luggage, which can be covered as necessary. The only slight problem with this is that the independently reclining rear seats require two smaller extra covers to take into account possible differences of intrusion into the luggage space. Dealing with the three covers can be a fiddly business, though I didn't help matters by trying to undo them while kneeling on one of the back seats (an amused bystander asked why I didn't just tip the seat forward, which I would have done if I'd realised it was possible.) The small list of options includes rear parking sensors for £310 and Nissan's own Birdview navigation system for £1500. The test car did not have the former, which turned out to be something of a pity (no scrape marks, though), but did have the latter. Sorry, but it's not worth the extra money. For a start, the screen lighting is set up the wrong way round, so that it's too dim in daytime but too bright at night. This makes it effectively unusable after dusk, and the only way of using it safely during the day is to switch on the sidelights. Just Hand Me A Map  But that's not the worst of it. The tracking system isn't very good at keeping up with the car, which can cause problems even when you're going through town. At motorway speeds the situation can become ridiculous, such as when I went sailing past an exit which the computer insisted was a quarter of a mile away. (I know this doesn't read very convincingly, but I didn't know the road - which was why I was using the damned system in the first place - and I'd assumed the exit I drove past was one of a closely-spaced pair.) Even that was a mere frippery compared with Birdview's bizarre attempt to lead me through a strange city by the most convoluted route imaginable. Not knowing the area myself, I had to believe what I was being told, and continued to wend my way through narrow side streets until I turned into one which had been permanently blocked off to through traffic. Unlike some rival sat-navs, Birdview does not suggest ways of rejoining the "correct" (ha!) route if you are forced to deviate from it, so I had to wander around for a bit before re-setting my destination. About ten minutes later, not in the sunniest of moods, I was advised to turn right on to a dual-carriageway, a manoeuvre which would have involved clambering over the central reservation. It was at this point that I decided once and for all that Birdview is for the birds, and it would be just peachy if Nissan either got the system working properly or bought in someone else's. Until either of these things happen, I'd give the sat-nav a miss and spend a minute fraction of the money saved on a good map. And then I'd enjoy living with what might just be the best car of its type on the market. Price: £20,895 Capacity: 2184cc Power: 111bhp 0-62mph: 13.7 seconds Maximum speed: 103mph Economy: 47.1mpg extra-urban, 39.2mpg combined CO2 emissions: 190g/km Insurance: Group 10 Nissan figures. Second opinion:  Am I glad I drove the X-Trail on home ground! Sat-nav apart, this is certainly a first-rate 4x4 for tarmac motoring, especially if that includes occasional bouts of bad-weather driving and towing. It's always worth bearing in mind that, although this is a chunky-looking off-roader, its electronic four-wheel drive system has features borrowed from the high-performance Skyline GT-R. The X-Trail feels robustly built and well planned, but I wonder what dwarf designed the radio controls. Thank goodness Nissan has now gone for common rail. Its current turbo diesels are vast improvements on their rackety predecessors. Yes, the combination of a good diesel engine, a high sixth gear, comfortable seats and a sufficiently supple ride quality does make this an unexpectedly good long-distance cruiser. That 47mpg extra urban fuel consumption figure is worth a few Brownie points too. Ross Finlay.
