When the Tino joined us in September 2001, it did so almost unnoticed. Six months on, it's become one of the surprise packages of the fleet, having cleared every obstacle placed in its path. If Nissan rang us tomorrow asking for it back, we'd probably put on a comedy voice and insist they were calling a wrong number. Being a strict five-seater, the Tino was never going to be quite the multi-purpose tool the Zafira is. However, taken for what it is, the Nissan has proved a fine family car. The seats are first class and bolt in and out easily: I've yet to sample a more user-friendly system. Unlike the Zafira, the Tino has a three-point centre belt in the rear, with the top anchor attached to the ceiling. This means I can put my two-year-old son George's child seat slap-bang in the middle. The result? I get to keep an eye on him, he gets a great view, and his hands stay well away from the door pulls. Everyone is happy. That noted, the Tino isn't without its faults. There's no shortage of little cubbies and shelves but the vast majority of them are pretty useless or oddly shaped. The CD multichanger is hidden beneath the driver's seat so you have to shift the chair all the way forward before you can reach it. Overall, though, these are relatively minor gripes. The boot is a good size and the nets on the sides are a great idea. If you need a reminder of how poor diesels used to be, take a test drive in a Tino Di. An old-school oil-burner, it's not one of Nissan's better efforts. From cold it sounds like a bottle bank in an earthquake. And the car's slow: while Nissan's figures suggest a 0-60mph time of 12.5 seconds, that is only half the story. There's no go whatsoever below 2,000rpm, which makes pulling out at fast-flowing roundabouts a real lottery. Add a full load of passengers and the problem is worse. It seems there is a lack of low-down torque because low-rev flexibility in all gears is less than sparkling. That's a pity, because the rest of the Tino's driving experience is actually quite good. Six months into our loan and the Tino still shines like a new pin. Despite repeated ham-fisted attempts to turn it into a removals van, the Nissan has yet to succumb to the rigours of life on the fleet. Although light-coloured plastics and MPVs are usually a match made in hell, the surfaces have stood up exceptionally well to the abuse meted out to them. And let's hear it for plastic wings, too. Bendy and utterly undentable, they have saved the Tino from the bodyshop on a number of occasions. I think the Tino is better built than any of the other compact people carriers on the fleet, and wouldn't hesitate in recommending a used example. Indeed, the only blemish it's picked up is a slight scuff on the bumper. Nothing. That's what the Tino has cost us in running repairs to date, thanks to a flawless reliability record and an uncanny ability to stay out of trouble. Its fuel consumption has averaged a healthy 41.6mpg, which goes some way towards compensating for the engine's utter reluctance to deliver power at low revs, while the big fuel tank has meant we've had infrequent trips to the fuel forecourt. On the inside it has been extremely well designed. When developing the Tino Nissan enlisted the assistance of the National Childbirth Trust here in the UK. Consequently, many child-friendly features have found their way into the car's interior. In particular, the rear seats are all individually removable. With the center rear seat removed, the two outer seats can be repositioned closer together and are variably slidable forwards or backwards. The two outer rear seats are also reclinable and foldable. All the rear seats are also mounted higher than the front seats for ease of access to kiddies by the parents. This also allows the kiddies to see outside more easily.The front seats are tapered at the back somewhat resulting in a narrower shoulder section to facilitate easy passage of arms, hands, baby wipes, sweets, and juice to kiddies sitting at the back. Legroom at the front is somewhat limited (this car is based on a small hatchback after all), though the more upright seating results in a lesser need for space.The 1.8l enging is sluggish on the motorway and doesn't pull away particularly quickly at junctions. The clutch is sharp and the car is easy to stall, especially on an incline.The air-conditioning on our model provides very poor output (it takes ages to cool right down and then it's not very cool). Even with the heating off warm air seems to be expelled by the interior vents, which may account for extra work undertaken by the air-con when activated.The satellite navigation is excellent. In our model it rises electronically from the center of the dash, but I believe current models have an integrated screen in the central console. The map screen provides a birds eye view of your position which is much easier to follow for those who find map reading difficult.The CD multi-changer is located in a space under the floor beneath the driver's seat. This is tricky to get to, but preferably to having it in the boot (since this would waste boot space and would require you to get out of the car to change CDs).With all the rear seats removed, and the front seats moved forwards, it's like a mini-van. Excellent for IKEA trips (I got a tall bookcase to fit comfortably).So far reliability has been excellent (no problems whatsoever *touch wood*). It is a well reported fact that nearly ever car that comes out of the factory has at least 5 faults . The Tino has to be the exception - we have not even experienced the slightest murmer of a fault . The tino is extremely spacious with plenty of headroom & leg room . There are storage drawers under both drivers seats ......valuables , brollies etc . Boot space is huge - 5 suitcases is not a problem . Value: Good levels of equipment as standard but it is a bit expensive when compared with the likes of the Scenic and the Tacuma. Costs: Fuel economy is pretty good from the 1.8 which gives about 36mpg on a good day. Insurance and servicing costs are also quite reasonable Reliability: It is a Nissan so nuf said really Driving: ......The steering is good and has lots of feel and the gearbox is slick too. However these are about the only good points that I can think of. When you try to accelerate hard there are two problems; first nothing happens and secondly the engine sounds as if someone has chucked a load of nuts and bolts into it. NOT GOOD! Advantages: Comfortably smooth, cost effectively elegant, superbly designedDisadvantages: Poor economy, some naff dealers, not suited for the tall Where we live, we see lots of Picasso's, loads of Scenics, far too many ugly (but fairly ingeneous) Zafiras and all too many Galaxy-esque tanks and the like. Anyway to the car:- We took delivery just 3 weeks ago, but we nearly purchased from a different maker JUST BECAUSE of the service we "didn't" get from our local dealer. By recommendation, we travelled 15 miles to a caring (or seemingly so) alternative dealer, DON'T be put off by bad service. Search your car first, test drive - THEN search for the supplier. It's the SE 1.8 petrol. A fantastic car and having drove both the scenic and picasso it's probably the best MPV out of them all. Great care has gone in to it's design with loads of storage space, cubby holes, cup holders and pull up meal trays (which kids love!). The seat design is also very clever with all of the back seats being seperate, adjustable and can be fully removed, and an option ......The boot could have been bigger as room is taken up with the rear wheel arches. But the boot is still sizeable with a good folding parcel shelf and netting to secure shopping etc. The drive experiance is very good, only let down a bit by some excess body roll, so you may find your bum sliding over to one side after a while. The gear box is as smooth as liquid and is a real pleasure. Seating position is very good with good visability.
