Nissan’s case is that the 4x2 is for those folk who want Sports Utility Vehicle style and practicality without the all-terrain mobility, and maybe it has a point. Not many of the 4x4s sprinkling our drives are actually ever going to get their skirts dirty, so all that engineering is, for most, surplus to requirements.Removing it provides savings in both purchase and running costs, but you still have the solid SUV protection, high-seating visibility and spaciousness, the assets which attract 4x4 buyers. Even the wipe-clean boot floor remains. An unspoken asset is that this X-Trail will still impress the neighbours who are unaware of its true nature.And that, despite appearances, is a genuine family car. Nissan has furthered that by endowing the 4x2 with a Family Pack that adds some unusual and appealing features. At the back, for example, there is a centre armrest with flip-up sides to turn it into a more-than-useful-sized table that incorporates drinks-holders, a detachable toy box encasing a power point, and two outer headrests that have fold-out "ears" to provide head support for sleepy occupants. As the rear seats also recline, it’s very easy to drop off and skip the stress of a long journey. Spaciousness in all directions is also a feature of this rear-seat area.There’s more interesting thinking at the front. All dials are centrally positioned, allowing for a handy dash-top container in front of the driver. The main idea is that info isn’t hidden by the steering wheel, but I’m never really convinced by anything that demands a change of eyeline. But the whole fascia is very clean-lined and metal facings relieve a considerable amount of plastic, although its shaping is imaginative.The neatest touch of all for me was the drinks holders at each end of the dash, with cooling or warming facility. A small thing but a nice one. There is a central chilled container as well.The Family Pack also brings in unique upholstery for seats, which are large, comfortable and supporting, with a range of manual adjustments at the front. The absence of reach variation of the steering wheel is disappointing, but the provision of cruise control and audio buttons on it continues the well-thought-out ergonomics.As a result, life is easy and pleasant for the occupants. The X-Trail 4x2 provides both sophisticated ride and handling characteristics, even though there is no stability control programme, and it is not unwieldy, either – the turning circle of 10.5 metres is impressive and useful in car parks.The 4x2 is equipped with either a two-litre petrol or a 2.2 diesel, and it was the latter which powered this car. Smooth enough on the move to deceive my passenger, the 136hp turbocharged common rail unit provides 231lb ft of pull, generating incisive acceleration when required and minimising use of the nice six-speed manual gearbox.However, even that doesn’t mean wonderful economy, the official average being 38mpg, which seemed on the optimistic side. Carbon dioxide emissions of just over 200g/km, although cleaner than of yore, are disappointing for a diesel, too. Nevertheless, that’s slightly better than the all-wheel drive versions and considerably so over the petrols.You have to rate these stats against the car’s flexibility. I’ve already talked about the amount of room for passengers, but if it’s cargo you are interested in the X-Trail excels. In normal use there are 350 litres of boot space, but the rear seats fold and stack and it is possible to create more than 1,800 litres.In-car storage includes a good number of cubby holes and containers, including one in the sliding armrest.Among other standard features are climate control, cruise control, four electric windows, electric door mirrors, front and side airbags, leather grips, front and rear reading lamps, RDS and CD player, electronic brake force distribution and brake assist in the ABS, superlocking with ultrasonic and perimetric alarm and 16in alloys.All in all, it’s a clever package in a car of quality and the SUV sense of security counts for a lot with some people.
