Very wrong. Because on 13 January at Autosport International, Birmingham, Nissan will unveil a limited production, 300PS edition of its 350Z coupe in association with Sony PlayStation’s ‘Gran Turismo 4: The Real Driving Simulator’. You might want a moment to read that again. Only 176 of these machines will be available in the UK at a price Nissan will announce at Autosport International. Pre-orders will be taken from 1 February at the traditional time of 3.50pm. And yes, Nissan expects them to go pretty sharpish. The GT4 is the zippiest 350Z Nissan has yet sold in the UK. The award winning 3.5-litre V6 motor gets revised pistons and camshaft as well as electronic exhaust valve timing control. This helps produce another 20PS to give 300PS developed at 6400 rpm – that’s 200 rpm higher than standard which says a lot about the revier nature of the GT4. Top speed remains a limited 155 mph but at 5.8 seconds, the GT4 is even quicker to 62 mph than standard. It howls louder, too. All 176 GT4s run on a new design of lacquered, five-spoke, 18" alloy wheel. And no, they won’t be available as an option on the standard Z … nor will the sensational Ultra Yellow paint job that covers 76 of the UK’s allocation of GT4s. This special paint uses a high-luminance, high-chroma pearl pigment along with three layers of top coat to give a surface that looks like you could dive in and swim about. And forget eye-catching. This colour is eyeball-wrenching. In quiet contrast, the remaining 100 will be painted in stark Kuro Black. Inside, the interior mirrors that of the 350Z GT Pack with two black leathered, electrically adjustable and heated seats as well as a thumping, 240 watt BOSE tuned stereo and 6 CD in-dash changer. Marking out each UK supplied GT4 will be a numbered, interior mounted plaque and in the boot, owners will find a gift box from Nissan containing a Sony PS2 and GT4 game. So play can continue at home, obviously. Gran Turismo 4 is Sony’s second full GT game for PS2 and gets its Europe-wide launch, as every gamer knows, towards the end of February. With this latest release, Polyphony takes a massive stride forward towards its aim of crafting the ‘ultimate racing game’. Topping the innovations of Gran Turismo 4 is a mind-boggling new physics model that allows for the most realistic simulation yet across 50 different racing circuits of the driving characteristics of each car. And there are 500 to choose from. Only one though has been considered worthy enough by Sony to bear the Gran Turismo 4 name … the Nissan 350Z. The only time the GT4 will be shown in the UK before deliveries start in March is at Autosport International in what will be its European debut. As well as seeing the car on Nissan’s stand, visitors will get a preview of the game. And a chance to drive the car … in virtual reality, that is. If you’re going, look for Nissan Motorsport’s Dakar Pickup above the crowds and a flash of yellow. Or just listen for the buzz that will be around it. || if(window.yzq_d==null)window.yzq_d=new Object(); window.yzq_d['iffPA9mSu10-']='&U=12cksep92%2fN%3diffPA9mSu10-%2fC%3d-1%2fD%3dHEAD%2fB%3d-1%2fV%3d0'; if(window.yzq_d==null)window.yzq_d=new Object(); window.yzq_d['ivfPA9mSu10-']='&U=13lq1sc13%2fN%3divfPA9mSu10-%2fC%3d200127901.202054760.203318772.200000042%2fD%3dN%2fB%3d201139883%2fV%3d1'; HomeNews/ReviewsFeaturesPhotosBuySellForumVideosGreen CentreFrankfurt 2007 if(window.yzq_d==null)window.yzq_d=new Object(); window.yzq_d['i_fPA9mSu10-']='&U=12a5etcp7%2fN%3di_fPA9mSu10-%2fC%3d-1%2fD%3dMH%2fB%3d-1%2fV%3d0'; NewsReviewsPreviewsWomen´s ReviewsVan Reviews Cars > News and Reviews > Car Reviews > Nissan > Nissan 350Z GRAN TURISMO 4 if(window.yzq_d==null)window.yzq_d=new Object(); window.yzq_d['jPfPA9mSu10-']='&U=12bqfmshv%2fN%3djPfPA9mSu10-%2fC%3d-1%2fD%3dOEM%2fB%3d-1%2fV%3d0'; Nissan 350Z GRAN TURISMO 4 Tuesday November 15 (First written on 2005-07-18) Critics Have Claimed That The Playstation Driving Game Gran Turismo 4 Is Even Better Than The Real Thing. Not If he Real Thing Is A Nissan 350Z, Claims Andy EnrightIll admit it. Im a Gran Turismo addict. The slow burn of starting out with a basic hatchback and gradually souping it up, selling and trading up for ever quicker exotica is just irresistible to a petrolhead like me. Frustratingly difficult in its later stages, the game works on so many levels. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value Great music, jaw-dropping graphics and a fetish for arcane Japanese performance machinery has spawned a whole host of imitators. Now in its fourth iteration, the Gran Turismo franchise has given birth to a car, the special edition Nissan 350Z Gran Turismo 4.This should, in theory, be a marriage made in heaven, for the 350Z is the sort of car that most in this office would pawn their grandparents for, a modern sporting icon that is genuinely tough to fault. Although well have to rely on the game to find out how a 350Z feels around the final sweeper of Grand Canyon race track, it will be possible to drive this car on actual tracks like Germanys Nurburgring and see how your time in a real 350Z stacks up. Sounds like a plan. Fans of the latest version of this game will know that its public release has been put back from December 2003 to Christmas 2004 and is now scheduled for Spring 2005 but Nissan have a better record for punctuality, the 350Z GT4 making its debut at the Autosport International show in Birmingham on the 13th January. Only 176 cars are offered for sale in the UK, priced at £29,500, so the competition to get behind the wheel is going to be hot. It would have been very easy to just add a new paint colour and a set of GT4 decals, mats and flaps, but this Nissan is a whole lot more focused than that. The bottom line is more power 20bhp more. Now rated at 300bhp courtesy of revised pistons and camshaft as well as electronic exhaust valve timing control. Its even starting to sound like the game. In an ideal world, other GT4 features like Weight Reduction 1, super soft slick tyres, a brake balance controller and a Racing Intercooler would also be on the menu."In short order the 350Z has become a modern sporting icon"Back in the land of reality, the 350Z GT4 features a new design of lacquered five-spoke 18-inch alloys which wont be offered on the standard Z car. Audi dropped a clanger a few years back by introducing a special edition TT S-line and then, a couple of months later, infuriating those customers who paid a premium for the special edition car by introducing them on the standard TT. No danger of Nissan repeating that. Just try finding a standard 350Z painted in the Ultra Yellow that adorns 76 of the 176 car 350Z GT4 allocation. This special paint uses a high-luminance chroma pearl pigment along with three layers of top coat for an outrageously lustrous finish. The remainder of the cars will be painted a rather more restrained Kuro Black. The interior is largely identical to that of the 350Z GT Pack with a pair of charcoal leather electrically adjustable and heated sports seats as well as a 240 watt BOSE stereo with six-disc in-dash changer. Unique to the 350Z GT4 is a numbered interior plaque while in the boot theres a gift box from Nissan that contains a Sony Playstation2 and Gran Turismo 4 game. The fun neednt let up. Much of the demand for the 35Z has stemmed from three key factors styling, pricing and provenance. The lines, penned by Brit Ajay Panchal, have that taut, wheel-at-each-corner rightness that looks good from any angle. The chunky upright door handles, the slash of the tail lights and the muscular wheelarches catch the eye, but these styling features are just highlights in what is something of a neat feat of penmanship from the youthful Panchal. And then theres the history that backs the car up. As well as the Z-car legend to lean upon, the 350Z draws sustenance from the Skyline, a Nissan line that has achieved what is close to automotive canonisation by its legions of devotees. Where as the Skyline legend was built upon 2.6-litres of turbocharged straight-six, the 350Z instead opts for a power pack that will delight automotive purists a sweet-revving normally-aspirated 3. 5-litre V6. Although it never approaches the almost sickening accelerative punch of a Skyline, the 350Zs engine nevertheless has the ability to punt that pretty profile up the road with considerable verve. In GT4 guise its that little bit sharper than standard and sounds a whole lot more raucous, answering early criticisms that the 350Z was actually a whole lot quicker than it felt. This was due to its broad spread of torque, impressive refinement and supple ride making indecent figures on the speedometer feel remarkably easy. The GT4 now feels a whole lot racier and ruder. If customers want to go even further, a NISMO bodykit designed with Gran Turismo developers Polyphony digital can be added for £2,495 although it has to be said that this is a rather acquired taste. UK cars benefit from a few modifications especially for the domestic market such as a larger fuel tank and a bigger radiator, largely due to the fact that we drive further and faster than our transatlantic cousins. We also get Brembo brakes, xenon headlights and standard Electronic Stability Programme, presumably because our faster driving occasionally results in unintended off road excursions. ESP does a great job at keeping the 350Z on the straight and narrow should you get a little overenthusiastic with the loud pedal, but should you really excel yourself, youll be reassured that there are not only twin, front and side airbags but curtain bags as well. Impressive stuff. Priced at £1,500 above the regular GT pack 350Z, the Gran Turismo 4 edition looks good value for money. The engine modifications alone are easily worth that premium and the paint, the alloys and the consumer electronics are just a very nice bonus. Kazunori Yamauchi, Gran Turismos creator owns two 350Zs so perhaps the virtual one is nearly as good as the real thing? By Brett Fraser May 2006 One of the more enduring and endearing features of our long-term Zed was that, no matter what other cars it was in the company of, it never felt like the short straw. If everyone else in the office shot off in Ferraris or Porsches, you never felt hard done by to 'just' have the keys to the Nissan - it had more than a touch of the mini-exotic about it. Even on a circuit, surrounded by trackday specials, the Zed's blend of the soulful and the capable ensured no hard feelings; quite the opposite, in fact. The car's appearance - not to mention its performance - on both evo Road & Track Car 2005 (issue 081) and evo Car of the Year 2005 (087) gives you some idea of the esteem in which we hold the big-hearted coupe. Sure, it may not have reached the top-step of the podium in either competition, but that didn't stop us feting it as 'a tactile, sensual delight' and 'a sure-fire future classic'. Recent upgrades to the model have gifted all 350Zs with the same 296bhp motor as our one, but at the time we took over the running of the bright yellow GT4 Anniversary model in August 2005, that output represented 20bhp over standard. The extra horses didn't exactly result in a stampede of additional performance, yet their presence did inject the whole car with even greater vivacity. If the notion that we were going to enjoy life with the Zed from the moment it arrived was hardly a revelation, there were a few early surprises with quality. Admittedly, our car came to us following several months of hard labour on the Nissan press fleet, so we could forgive it a few scuffs here and there, but not so easy to ignore was a fuel filler flap that seemed to have bypassed the part of its construction process where it's moulded to match the contours of the car, and the remote release button for said flap that had fallen out of its mounting slot in the lower section of the facia. Still, at least we were able to press-fit the latter item back into location; the cracking leather on the outer edge of the driver's seat side-bolsters after only 6000 miles was somewhat more concerning. Many thanks to everyone who wrote in with their experiences of Zed ownership, though it has to be said that the main recurring themes of your letters on what to look out for didn't manifest themselves on our Zed. Several owners reported what they described as excessive stone-chipping on the nose of their cars; it wasn't an issue for us. Nor did we have any problems with dodgy electric window motors or leaking struts for the rear hatch. But we do have to agree that trying to check the oil with a dipstick the shape of a watch-spring is a nightmare. Fortunately our Zed was parsimonious in its oil consumption, so frequent checks weren't required. Its thirst for fuel was also restrained - it returned an average of just over 26mpg during its time at evo, although our ham-footed staff photographer, Andy Morgan, did manage to drag one tankful down below the 20mpg mark. I wish we could give you an idea about tyre life - an important factor in a rear-drive car so keen to go sideways - but we fitted new rear boots ahead of time to give the Zed the best possible chance on eCOTY. Punch 'quintessential sports coupe' into a search engine in a few years' time and heading the list of results will probably be the Nissan 350Z. It has brutish charm, magnetic looks, big-bore performance and a chassis that's both lively and supremely friendly. It's also easy to live with as your daily driver and feels - seat bolsters aside - as though it'll go on forever. And Anniversary models like ours don't seem to depreciate much, either - no wonder Nissan wanted our Zed back again.
