The Nissan NX was essentially a B13 platform Nissan Sentra or Sunny with a different body shell. The NX was, loosely, an evolution of the Nissan Pulsar NX/Nissan EXA sold from 1987-1990, and it also replaced the Nissan Sentra hatchback. Nissan NX Coupe 1993 Interior [edit] Models [edit] NX1600/NX2000 (North America) The NX1600 was based on the standard 1.6L Sentra (engine code GA16DE), and the NX2000 was based on the 2.0 L SE-R model (engine code SR20DE). It was produced from 1991-1993 in the US (mainly competing with the Mazda MX-3 and Honda CR-X del Sol). Also, it was produced for a few more years in other countries. The NX2000 model had some mechanical improvements over its SE-R sibling. It had larger brakes and more aggressive tires on wider 6" wheels (195/55VR-14 with 14x6" wheels vs. the 185/60HR-14 with 14x5.5" wheels and tires in the SE-R). The NX2000 brakes are a common aftermarket upgrade for B13 Sentra SE-Rs. The NX2000 also had a center armrest, a larger two core radiator, and slightly lower ride height compared to the SE-R. However, the T-top roof in the NX2000 along with the mechanical upgrades made it slightly heavier than the SE-R. The NX2000, with its light weight, stiff chassis, and limited-slip differential, was considered one of the best-handling front-wheel-drive cars of the time. In 1992, Road & Track magazine included the NX2000 in a test of the world's best handling cars against such competition as the Acura NSX, Porsche 911, Nissan 300ZX, Mazda Miata, and Lotus Elan. [edit] 100NX (Europe) The 100NX came with two engine options, a 1.6 L and a 2.0 L. The 1.6 liter, made from 1990 to February 1993 had a carburetor fitted which tended to consume excessive fuel as it aged. From April 1993 onwards, the 100NX was sold with a more efficient fuel injected setup. 1.6 carbureted — 90 bhp (67 kW; 91 PS) 1.6 fuel injected — 105 bhp (78 kW; 106 PS) 2.0 fuel injected — 150 bhp (112 kW; 152 PS) North American version 2.0 fuel injected — 143 bhp (107 kW; 145 PS) The 1.6 liter fuel injected version achieved 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) in 10.5 seconds and had a top speed of 121 mph (195 km/h). The 100NX was mainly sold with a T-bar removable roof in Europe. [edit] NX Coupe (Japan) The Nissan NX was also sold in the Japanese domestic market as the Nissan NX Coupe. Some models were fitted with T-Tops, whilst others were hardtop. The Japanese domestic NX Coupe's came with either a 1.5 DOHC carburetted engine (GA15(DS)), a 1.6 DOHC EFI engine (GA16(DE)), a 1.8 DOHC EFI engine (SR18(DE)) or the rare 2.0 DOHC EFI engine (SR20DE)of the NX-R (Aus). The model was available in automatic or manual transmission. The 1.5 DOHC models were all fitted with digital speedometers, whilst all other engine versions had the standard analogue gage. All Japanese domestic models were fitted with electric windows, air conditioning, power steering, electric mirrors and central locking which locked the doors automatically at 18 km/h whilst driving. [edit] Safety In Australia, the 1991-96 Nissan NX was assessed in the Used Car Safety Ratings 2006 as providing "significantly worse than average" protection for its occupants in the event of a crash.[1] [edit] Racing [edit] North America [edit] SCCA Showroom Stock B Soon after its import into the United States, the NX2000 was classified by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) into its Showroom Stock B category for the 1992 year, pitting it against such cars as Mitsubishi Mirage Turbo (defending SSB champion Gerald Alaimo and others), its B13 cousin the Nissan Sentra SE-R (David Daughtery and others), and the sole second-generation the Toyota MR2 (driven by Dane Pitaressi). The NX2000 posted several National wins throughout the year, and garnered much attention from competitors. The 1992 SSB SCCA Runoffs championships saw two podium finishes for the NX2000, with the gold medal taken home by Mark Youngquist, followed by Ken Payson in a Mirage then the Greg Amy (tGA) in his NX2000 taking home third place. The 1993 season proved it wasn't a fluke, as David Daughtery took home yet another SCCA Runoffs championship for the NX2000. However, by that time the 1993 MR-2 with its updated suspension and the much-improved S14 version of the Nissan 240SX came along; while the NX2000 continued to be campaigned nationally and sporadically posted wins throughout subsequent racing seasons, it never again won a Runoffs championship (Tony Suever won in '94 with the MR-2, and the '95 and '96 SSB championships were won by Daughtery in the S14 240SXh[2].) The car soon thereafter timed-out for eligibility for SSB racing. [edit] SCCA Improved Touring The Nissan NX2000 and the Sentra SE-R were soon approved for SCCA's Improved Touring category. At the time of its initial classification - due primarily to their larger (2.0-liter) displacement - they were dropped into the ITS, or Sports, class. This pitted them against other larger-displacement, GT-class cars such as the Mazda RX-7 and BMW 325. The cars languished in ITS for several years; despite a few sporadic oddball wins in ITS ("Crazy Joe" DiMinno in his Sentra SE-R at Watkins Glen International in the rain in 2003) due to its very low chances of winning it garnered very little interest from competitors. Further, despite numerous requests from SCCA competitors it was never re-classified into a lower class (such as ITA, with the Acura Integra, Honda CRX Si, Saturn SC, etc). In 2001, Kakashi Racing from Connecticut began to prepare both a Nissan NX2000 for former SSB driver tGA and provide support for DiMinno in his Sentra (the NX of tGA was the same exact chassis he used in the '92 Runoffs). At the same time they began an effort to convince SCCA that the car belonged in ITA. They coordinated efforts with Kirk Knestis to form a sub-group called "Improved Touring 2" to bring attention to the "orphaned" 2-liter front-wheel-drive cars languishing in ITS. In 2004 SCCA announced a complete re-vamp of the IT classification process, placing both Nissan B13 cars into ITA for the 2005 racing season. The end result was a 2006 American Road Race of Champions (ARRC) ITA win at Road Atlanta for tGA and Kakashi Racing[3]. Due to this success the car has again garnered a lot of attention from competitors, and a resurgence of entries for both the NX2000 and Sentra SE-R in Improved Touring is expected. Report this review love my 100nx but it has its problems. 1.. the brakes are rubbish when hit hard at speed, they lock. 2.. oil leak - can be resolved with Wynn's stop leak addictive. 3.. most 100nx have this problem, the boot lid doesn't stay up. 4.. space at the back is almost none. you can get a person in the back if you fold them in half. but who cares about the passengers anyway!!!! 5.. finding parts, not easy, not cheap. awesome performance for a 1.6, spent a bit upgrading the ignition system, air filter and braking and now my mates in their 318i and golf's and astra's eat my dust. (but don't push the car beyond its limits, this is from experience) servicing is very cheap and with a Haynes manual you can do it yourself in 30mins it doesn't matter what the weather is outside or how hard you drive her, she always starts and gets you from A to B. cousins 09 Audi S3, mates BMW M3, BMW 318i have more problems and spend more time in the garage then my 17year 100nx not alot of people know what the car is. so when the see it, the music is banging and the roof is off. heads turn the most fun ive had in any car Read Guest's full review and ratings (211 words and 1 comment) Guest 24th Dec 2009 Reviewer rating: Guest's review has yet to be rated - Be the first! Report this review Have owned my Nissan 100NX from new, had it serviced regularly and only needed minor repairs due to normal wear.Spent less than 2,000 pounds sterling on repairs over 16 years. Very good value for a reliable, economic, sporty car. Have driven 190,000 kilometers on motorways and rough mountain roads with no problems. Would like the seats to be more comfortable. I can't fault it. The design, quality of paintwork, shape of car, it stands out and looks good on the road, even though I live in a countr ... The Body kit coming from Germany should arrive soon so I am looking forward to giving the car it's face lift. Report this review Overall the Nissan 100 NX is a nice car to drive - it does turn heads when the roof is off and the sun is out. I would sugest you get one in mint condition as when the part ware out then the fun goes out of the car because the main replacment parts are exspensive to repalce. I was quoted £143 + vat just for the replacment switch for the eletric windows. Report this review The Nissan 100 NX was used as a workhorse everyday for six years. It went places where sports cars don't or should not go! The engine is based in the Nissan Sunny and is generally easy to work on, however Nissan parts are often shocking in price. The gaiters often needed replacing and welding was required later in life, but, this can be forgiven as the car (mostly driven by my partner) was enjoyed and proved eccomomical at the same time giving the fun factor to driving especially in the summer ... The Nissan 100NX offers something a little different if youre after a budget used coupe and want manageable bills without the froufrou image of something like a Vauxhall Tigra. Tracking one down isnt going to be easy but these cars were built on Nissan Sunny underpinnings and are therefore tough and reliable. Its not the last word in the style stakes, true, but the shape has worn well and your neighbour wont know what on earth it is. The lift-off targa roof panels are the 100NXs biggest draw and differentiate it from its erstwhile rivals. The boot isnt a bad shape and holds 11.6 cubic feet of fresh air but if you want to stow the roof panels, then you wont have room for luggage. The rear seats are a joke, even when compared with compact coupe rivals. As a guide, youll get 18inches of legroom in the Nissan compared to 25 in a Tigra and 26 in a Honda Civic Coupe. Whats slightly baffling is where the Tigra and the Civic looked fresh in 1995, they have now dated quite significantly and the more restrained styling of the Nissan now appears easier on the eye. The 100NX was reasonably well-equipped, being supplied as standard with alloy wheels, electric mirrors, central locking, electric windows and power steering. Its worth bearing in mind that this car was developed before airbags and pretensioning seat belts became de rigeur although it is fitted with side impact beams. You wont need to rob the pension plan to afford one of these. Trade prices start at under �700 for the earliest cars, rising to �2,000 for the most optimistic vendors with low mileage examples. Do your homework and you shouldnt need to budget much above �1,400 to find a tidy car with the later engine. Insurance is rated at Group 11. Look out for worn driveshaft joints on early 100NX models. You should also check for heavy front tyre wear, oil leaks and signs of engine coolant loss, which could indicate cracking or warping of the cylinder head. The interior trim isn't particularly durable and you need to check for rust around the wheelarches and the bottom of the rear tailgate(approx based on a 1995 100NX) A clutch assembly will be around �85, an alternator should be close to �195 and a radiator around �140. Brake pads are around �35 a set, a replacement headlamp is close to �95. A full exhaust is about �300 (including catalyst) and a starter motor around �240. Do your research and find out which parts are common with the Nissan Sunny as these will often be priced far lower than if, for example, you ask for a 100NX clutch. The 100NX isnt a particularly exciting car to drive. Its modest power output gets it to 60mph in 10.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 115mph. The upside of this is that fuel consumption averages hover around 31mpg, so running it isnt going to be expensive and this, coupled with the relatively cheap insurance and lift off roof, makes it a desirable choice for penniless youngsters, safety caveats notwithstanding. Forever destined to remain an interesting curio, the Nissan 100NX seems to have become a better used car than it ever was when new. It offers a bit of charm for very little money and there are many doing the rounds quite happily that are approaching 200,000 miles. Find one with half that on the clock and you could look forward to a few years of very inexpensive sunshine coupe driving. Just dont expect white-knuckle thrills.
